LEGO AND NERF THE PERFECT GIFT FOR ANY LITTLE MAN AT CHRISTMAS

29 Nov

As many of you may well have noticed, my Little man has become something of a Lego mad 11-year-old! Funny enough he doesn’t seem to be the only one as when engaging in a conversation on the boy with Aspergers Facebook page, Lego seems to be top of the list when it comes to a child with Aspergers Christmas wish list!

With Little man becoming totally obsessed with these little coloured blocks that have the tendency to make you scream out loud if accidentally stepping on one, you can only imagine his excitement in the discovery of his latest Santa’s Little helpers review.

Those lovely people over at Argos are really getting to know what my children like as the review products being sent just seem to hit the nail on the head!

This time Argos supplied the Little Man with a selection of LEGO Green building plates 32 x 32 studs, a big box of Lego bricks and an awesome Nerf Vortex Proton.

Image via Wikipedia

LEGO PLATES AND BOX OF LEGO BRICKS

The Green Lego building plates 32 x 32 studs are the ideal base for any construction, whether it’s a forest, house, football stadium or just a base to showcase their favourite transport creations. These are the ultimate Lego accessory for any Lego mad collector.

These plates can’t be brought in-store and are advertised as an Argos Online Exclusive (forming part of the Argos extended internet range)

These are sold individually and are priced at £7.45

As mentioned Argos also sent along a big box of Lego containing over 300 pieces,  the perfect addition to Little man’s already growing collection. Argos stock a number of Lego additions in it’s online Lego bricks and more range. This includes all the “Must Have” essentials such as whole boxes of wheels and windows, even tiles for all those children that just love to build houses and skyscrapers.

Armed with his new plates and extension of bricks Little man set of on a construction mission which actually resulted in him disappearing for a good few hours, into his own little Lego world aka his bedroom.

Recently the Little guy has been doing some very serious planning (believe me I know! His recited this plans to me daily) Now my son tells me he is going to have his very own brand! Yep, this brand will own a number of buses and a string of hotels. With this he uses his PC to construct a plan for his hotels, this consists of the whole virtual design and layout, its contents and main attractions, a massive plan and project for this Little man. The brand name is already decided and my Little guy has given me the strict instructions not to disclose due to copyright which he begs me to actually pay to register! Hopefully this will lead to a bright future for my Little man! Anyway my point being, Little man is actually now using Lego alongside his PC to plan his hotels and if you haven’t already guessed the Green plates have made the ideal platform to do this.

Yep, this 11-year-old has been extremely busy planning for his future with the use of Lego. He has given me some deep and in-depth talks on the Ins and outs of his project with the use of his Lego built hotel plans to demonstrate. As much as I love my son, he does tend to overdo it a little when it comes to one-way conversations in respects to his own interests a well-known characteristic of his Aspergers syndrome.

Nonetheless, it’s been eventful and fun in our house and what with Little man being of school the past week due to illness, Lego has become an extension of himself!

Little man gives this a cool five stars ***** unsurprisingly!

Above the Lego plates and one of many Little Man’s hotel development plans

Parental Perspective

Lego is a firm favourite with me, its given my son an additional special interest besides his deep fondness of transport (mainly buses). He incorporates the two interests (building buses with Lego) and has had a great deal of fun discovering and learning from his new love of Lego.

Lego is a great developmental tool that helps to aid the imagination of a child as well as the addition of the development of fine motor skills.

As a parent I highly recommend Lego for children of both sexes and those over the age of 4.

As a parent to a child with Aspergers, I couldn’t recommend it enough!

These goodies got an awarded score of 4 stars **** from me. Minus one for the pain inflicted to my foot!

Some hotels on wheels creations

NERF VORTEX PROTON

We quite recently reviewed another Nerf blaster (the daddy of Nerf’s) So, I knew the Little man would be happy to receive this addition of Nerf blaster.

The Vortex proton is one of the smaller Nerf blasters, its lightweight, looks great and isn’t overly priced.

The Nerf Vortex Proton is a compact fast loading single short disc Nerf Blaster.

As with all the Nerf Blasters, this features XLR long-range disc. This particular model comes complete with 3 discs and an instruction booklet.
The disc can be fired up to 60 feet and has a recommended age limit of 8 years plus.

Of course the Little man got all excited when discovering his new Nerf Vortex Proton and couldn’t wait for a test run. His was actually quit clever when coming up with and carry out his idea to make a target from a cardboard box. This meant he could practice and practice and he did! Later his cousin who is also on the autism spectrum arrived. These two very loud boys got down to some serious Nerf playtime.

Little man’s score a 4 stars ****

Parental Perspective

I wasn’t to sure on the Nerf collection when hearing about them and wondered if these toy guns were really appropriate. However once I saw them I decided that with the resemblance to a water gun these Nerf Blasters are just a toy and nothing more.

I love how the Nerf encouraged Little man’s creativity when he decided he would build a target out of cardboard. The little man really used problem solving when considering ways to improve his aim, and by thinking out the box he came up with the perfect solution. The Nerf has also helped with little man’s aim and ability to judge distance.

At just £11.99 a tiny price in contrast with the newer and bigger Nerf blasters, I found it to be a great price, something of a bargain. This is an ideal first Nerf blaster and one I think deserves a place in our Santa’s Little helpers wish list!
5 stars ***** from mum.

Why not visit the Argos Nerf shop for your perfect Nerf blaster

Thanks you Argos for again sending us some awesome products to use within our Santa’s Little helpers feature. I really recommend all the fab toys above and those we have already reviewed for Argos.

If your interested in any of the mentioned products in this post (or any other toys available from Argos) could I suggest you pop over to Argos online and buy or reserve your products for collection from your nearest store! What with us being just a few days from December and a mere 27 days from Christmas, Argos will be over ran with last-minute Christmas shoppers. Please take this advice, I know as I’m normally one of them last-minute crazy shoppers and yes, things tend to get a little crazy down at Argos this time of year.

Lastly some other big news in the world of Argos and Christmas is their ‘Big up to half price toy sale‘ with many of the big brand toys currently on sale it’s one not to be missed so I advise you get on over there right away to avoid disappointment.

Review of the Vax W90-RU-P Rapide Ultra 2

6 Nov

Vax Voice

How excited was I when those lovely lot at Vax invited me to be a Vax consumer tester by joining the new ‘Vax Voice’

What a great opportunity to be given, I was made up!

Now I wont lie, I don’t love cleaning, it actually drains my soul & I could think of a million & one other things I’d rather be doing! So, I’m not going to start this post by declaring to the world how much I love to clean!

What I do love is finding a product that will help me get the task at hand done in both the most efficient and speediest way possible. That’s why I’m dead chuffed to become a part of ‘Vax Voice’

I first discovered the beauty of Vax a few years back when I invested my pennies in a “mean machine” the nick-name I have given my first ever Vax upright vacuum-cleaner! Since then I’ve never looked back and continue to use the ‘Mean Machine’ to this day.

Being a mum is a time-consuming job, especially when you’re a mother of three, one with Aspergers syndrome and another fast approaching the age of two. I therefore like to use a product that’s not only going to give me the best results but one that’s going to do it in the fastest time possible. That’s what I get from Vax.

The Product… Vax W90-RU-P Rapide Ultra Carpet Washer

I couldn’t wait to discover what these guys had in store for me. Well, in true Vax fashion I didn’t have to wait long to find out! Early morning I was greeted by a guy with a massive box stood outside my front door. The guy (aka the delivery man) had just become my father Christmas delivering me my new, ‘Vax W90-RU-P ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ carpet washer. Out came a knife to score open the very large box that held my new appliance sent to get my carpets all fresh and sparkling clean in the quickest of time! My first impressions of my new appliance was, “What a handsome devil you are”

Despite its intended use the ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ was surprisingly light and reasonable slim. ( though this is without the added water). Everything had its place, meaning it was extremely compact what with its removable handle allowing easy storage (new home allocated under the stairs).

Accessories included were

Float chamber, handle locking pin, pre treatment wand & holder, cleaning solution.

I’m normally a really naughty girl when It comes down to reading the enclosed instructions/user guide. I fully admit it! I’m the person that everyone hates, the person who never bothers to read the manual, only moaning later when I don’t fully understand how to work something. I somehow come to the conclusion that me and my new product, what ever that may be, will just gel, understanding what one another expect.

So, with a coffee in one hand and the user guide in the other I hit the sofa and engaged myself in some serious reading.

I Waited till both my elder children had returned to school following the half-term before putting the ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ to the test! (Little man and gadgets together is far too much to think about.)

Before you get started!

First I needed to assemble my product, first was the handle, this was easily done in a few simple steps.

Next up was the Pre-treatment wand that fitted to the front of the cleaner, again with the easy to follow step by step instructions given in the user guide I done this easily by myself.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

 Pre-treatment

I started with the recommended pre-treatment which is recommended for any hard to shift stains. I was doing the hall carpet that has seen better days. Lots of muddy shoes and bike wheels have graced its path over the course of the year. The solution needed to be mixed with water and then added to the cold water tank. Using the attached wand you then spray the desired area.

Vax recommends that pre-treatment is left for the full recommended 10-15 minutes before starting the full carpet cleaning process.

Getting on the job

The ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ uses a rotating brush action that is triggered when reclined which was easy to do with the use of a foot pedal located on the base of the appliance. The rotating brushes ensure a deep clean removing any allergens and odours (which is great if you have pets). I found it very easy to navigate around the hallway and even with the water tank filled, it still wasn’t overly heavy, (I recommend you don’t carry this up the stairs filled with water as this will make it much heavier). ‘The Rapide Ultra 2’ also comes with a hand-held brush for the hard to reach areas. Cleaning solution is dispensed via a number of trigger buttons. When using the upright cleaner this is done via the easy to reach button located on the top of the handle where you place your hand to steer the cleaner. The ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ uses a float which you fit to the dirty water tank. It’s this float that alerts you by a change in engine sound, when you need to change the water.

There are a number of gadgets that together with the appliance make this a fantastic product (you can even suck up spillage’s quick and easily) which is a great feature for any mum!

Thoughts

All the parts were easily removed and reattached (including the water tanks). The hose wheel located at the back keeps your appliance looking tidy and compact as did a number of other clips for the various parts.

The maintenance is very low-level, with the float chamber only requiring a rinse under a running tap and the tank just needing to be cleaned with fresh water and dried before being reattached.

The ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ done a grand old job on my tatty carpet (tatty it is no more). It was simply to set up and the ease of use was fantastic. I did worry that the carpet wouldn’t be dry in time for the children return home from school, but I need not have worried as like it promises the carpet dried reasonable quickly. The cleaner doesn’t let off excess water making your carpets soaking like many others tend to do. This is the result of the New Dual V technology that ensures consistent, powerful suction so carpets dry really quickly.

The only disappointment for me was the fact I didn’t carpet the living room as I wanted to last year (Instead went with the option of wooden flooring, what with my children, I thought this would be the best option) I take that back now as this was easier than scrubbing the decks so to speak.

Product information

The ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ does display a price tag of £279.00 and yes, I am extremely lucky to review this as I currently couldn’t afford this kind of money, however saying that, if I could then I would invest it in this. The good news is, Vax are currently selling it for a  special price of £169.99 for a limited time only!

My ‘Upright hover’ I invested in a few years back is still going strong and normally by now I would have replaced an average hover maybe 2 or more times.

If you have carpets that regularly require cleaning, especially if you have young children, then I highly recommend the ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ as the perfect cleaning companion.

(Note the small hand brush means car interiors, stairs, upholstery and more can be cleaned using the ‘Rapide Ultra 2’.)

If any problems occur with any Vax appliance they are quick to help, all you need to do is call their customer service team and they will do their best to help. Plus The Rapide Ultra 2 comes with a 2 year guarantee.

Click HERE to buy or gain more information.

Click HERE for a video demonstration & other consumer reviews.

(Note spares for your ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ can also be brought online with ease.)

We were very lucky to be given the ‘Rapide Ultra 2’ in exchange for an honest review. This hasn’t influenced my opinion in any way, all views remain my own.

Children’s fashion by Vertbaudet

4 Nov

Being a blogger,  you get some awesome opportunities come your way.

This was one off them, I was frilled when asked to review something from the Vertbaudetchildren’s range.

I find it hard to find clothing for Little man as he wears nothing but tracksuits as he is defensive to most materials due to his problems with his sensory processing.

I was going to try out a tracksuit for the purpose of this review but unfortunately the stock was all sold out when I choose the one I liked. With this I decided that it would be the perfect opportunity to showcase some children’s wear that would be suitable for the upcoming party season.

I couldn’t resist the girls clothing, they have some truly beautiful pieces. I spent what seemed like hours scoring over the girls dresses and came across some stunning pieces. I narrowed it down to a top and a skirt, (sold individually) together the cost of the outfit was a total of £31 which I thought was pretty reasonable given the excellent quality of both the items.

Check out the gorgeous items we chose.

 Girls top

This pretty long-sleeved 100% pure cotton jersey, is great for the child who has sensitive delicate skin. It features a print motif with embroidery and sequins (embroidery only in sizes 2-3 for health and safety reasons). It has back button fastening as-well as small gathers.

Available in a choice of 3 colours from ages 2yrs to 13/14 years Priced between £9-£13

Girls Frilled Skirt

A stunning dot print tulle with adjustable waistband with inner elastic and buttons. There is a side zip and a pretty velvet ribbon and bow on the waistband. The skirt is machine washable and 100% cotton satin lining with 100% polyester outer to give it that tulle frilled effect.

Available in five colours and from ages 2yrs all the way up to age 13/14yrs

priced between £14-£18

 WHY I LOVE THESE ITEMS

Although these items are great worn together as a party outfit  (perfect for the approaching party season this Christmas) they are also great worn separately. The top can be worn with almost anything as we chose the colour white. The top looks causal but pretty worn with a nice pair of bootcut jeans (Alice has worn this with a pair of leggings, however it’s getting a tad cold for that).

Although the skirt is quite dressy it still looks funky dressed down in a pair of winter tights and boots (the website shows a perfect example of this when worn by one of their models).

I just loved the fact it had an adjustable waistband, great for the child with no waist or one who is slightly larger. The skirt is a great length coming just over the knee and this combined with the adjustable waistband means your child with get some good wear out of it and your pennies will have gone that bit further.

These are real girlie pieces and Alice-Sara loves them worn both together and individually.

The quality is super impressive meaning you don’t mind spending that little bit more as you know it will last that bit longer.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Vertbaudet price they’re clothing based on the dress size ordered, example, the skirt in a 2-3 will cost you £14 where it’s £18 for a 9-10 year old, which seems fair enough given the extra material needed to make the clothes, plus this seems to be the way most mail order companies now operate .

 Level of service and delivery

I was super impressed with both items, the delivery process and speed, plus the level of customer service was fantastic.

Current online promotions

When browsing the Vertbaudet online store I discovered that they have currently got some “Not to be miss” promotions running, so thought I would share a few!

up to 30% off selected lines in the Autumn range and 20% off full priced items with the addition of a free gift of a £12 ‘baking kit’ by entering the promotion code 8074 at the checkout (Limited time only)

Review of the New Baby Annabell

29 Oct

We’ve had an awesome time putting together our first Christmas wish list as part of the Santa’s Little helpers feature. We have been extremely fortunate at how well its taken off, giving us great opportunities to work with some fantastic brands & retailers.

Now, I’m dead chuffed to announce, that Argos has become one of them fantastic retailers!

I was flattered when Argos complemented my blog and wanted to work with me. This is a retailer I have always used and remember my own mother doing so when I was a child.

It’s really fabulous working with such a big brand, who started by introducing me to their “Fab fifteen” (top 15 toys this christmas) which you have to admit, is a pretty amazing list.

The Argos Fab Fifteen Toys for Christmas 2011

Pre-school toys

Dance Star Mickey (age 2 +) £69.99

LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Tablet (age 4 +) £79.99

Sesame Street Let’s Rock Elmo (18 months +) £69.99

Octonauts Octopod Playset (age 3 +) £34.99

Boy’s toys

Nerf Vortex Proton (age 8 +) £14.99

LEGO Star Wars Sith Nightspeeder (age 7 +) £25.99

Girl’s toys

Fijit (age 6 +) £54.99

Moshi Monsters Mosh’n’Chat (age 6 +) £24.99

Barbie Puppy Water Park (age 4 +) £29.99

Chad Valley Designa Friend (age 3 +) £19.99

Baby Annabell (age 3 +) £44.99

Next, the children got to test some of their toys.

One being the brand new ‘Baby Annabell’ much to my daughters delight. ‘Baby Annabell’ is featured in the ‘fab fifteen’ as one of the top 5 girls toys this Christmas.

Baby Annabell is made by ‘Zapf Creations’ and is a delightful interactive baby doll that comes complete with bottle and fluffy plush sheep.

This doll has so much more going for her than just looking cute. Her interactive features set her apart from your standard baby doll! Talk to baby Annabell and hear her realistic babble, make her happy and listen to her laugh and giggle. Give baby Annabell her bottle and hear her realistically sucking as she drinks. Once she’s had enough remove her bottle to hear her burp just like a real baby. When its time for Baby Annabell’s nap, gentle rock her back and forth giving her bottom a little tap, this will see her drift of to sleep! If your quite you’ll even hear her breathing.

Baby Annabell will wake in her own time, clam her down by gently talking to her as you cuddle.

If all of the above isn’t exciting enough, Baby Annabell also has realistic movements in both her head and arms.

Alice’s thoughts

Alice loves baby dolls and over the years she has collected many dolls. I explained to Alice how lucky she was to be sent a baby Annabell and when I gave her the new doll she agreed to give some of her others to St Christopher’s hospice, which made me very proud as my daughter hates to part with anything! This isn’t her being selfish, she couldn’t if she tried, she just finds it hard to part with things, even those that have only ever been played with a small handful of times.

Nonetheless, Alice has now filled a black sack full of baby dolls and the odd soft toy, and in exchange, is now happily enjoying her new Baby Annabell.

I’m sure I don’t need to explain further in regards to how much she loved it! I think the images included in this post pretty much do the talking for me, wouldn’t you agree?

5 stars *****

 Parental perspective

From a parents perspective, ‘Annabell’ may seem a tad over priced at £44.99, but I can honestly say I’ve paid double the amount for a doll that isn’t half as nice or has a lot fewer features.

Even if you don’t agree that’s fine as Argos currently have the New Baby Annabell on sale for £22.49 for a limited time only

I want my little girl to stay a little girl for as long a possible, that’s why I love seeing her play and interact with her baby dolls.

Baby Annabell is a very well made doll, from her outfit all the way down to her plush sheep. She’s interactive and moves her head and arms. She has a lot to offer any little girl who likes playing with a baby doll.

It’s a 4 **** from me, for the simple fact she’s well played with bring a huge smile to my daughters face, which is priceless.

 Baby Annabell

£44.99 (Currently on SALE for £22.49)  from all Argos stores nationwide, as well as online.

Back to school with Matalan

6 Sep

Some weeks back, I wrote a post giving some, ‘Back to school tips’ to fellow parents of children on the autism spectrum. One of these tips related to shopping and the common issues experienced when having to shop with a child on the autism spectrum. With these issues in mind, I made the suggestion of purchasing your, “Back to school necessities” online, and to do so within good time!

Well, I must admit, that I myself failed, “Yet Again” to follow my own advice. Last week I still had school shoes, lunch boxes, PE kits and more to buy!

Well, thank you Matalan for saving me from what may have been, a shopping nightmare! Little man has been known to have some almighty mid shop meltdowns and I didn’t fancy another!

Yes, the lovely people at Matalan sent me an email setting me a challenge. I’m pretty used to challenges, but in this case it was the welcomed type!

The Challenge

Matalan online sent me a £50 voucher,  all I had to do was spend it carefully, getting as much for my £50 as possible. Lastly, I was to share my bargains here with my readers!

No problem, I’m not only a mother but a woman who loves to shop!

Bring it on!!!

So,  from the comfort of my sofa, with no meltdowns, anxiety or tears, I went shopping at Matalans online store.

On loading the site, I discovered that there was a sale showcasing items from just £1, (Oh yes, that’s my type of sale)!

Sale

The Sale is currently still on and is offering some items at a massive 75% off  As you can see from the above, it hosts some great bargains!

For me my best buy has to be the Hooch boots that had a fabulous £11.25 saving. These will do Alice-Sara proud in the winter I’m sure! They look really well made, as-well as being bang on trend.

Leggings £1 (were £6) Girls biker boots by Hooch, £3.75 (were £15)

The non stick pans, well, how can you resist a price like this? £5.50 is a steal.

Non-stick pans in Red, £5.50 (was £22)

The two bras are a bargain at £6 each but getting them both for £3 is super, and was simply my little teat to me! (Sorry guys I haven’t posted a pic of these but you can check out the underwear range online)

We decided that the leggings were much to nice for PE and having only cost £1 we are very pleased with them.

Even the items not in the sale were a steal. Little man has problems with his fine motor skills, making laces a problem! His black trainers with velcro fastening are ideal and a great price too!

Girls Black button shoes, £8

Boys black trainers, £7

Autumn range

I was sent some fantastic books showcasing the new women’s and homeware range for the Autumn. The books were super posh and came with CD-ROMs

It’s clear to see that Matalan’s have had a redesign and I was pretty  impressed and excited at what was on offer throughout both of these books.

Looks like its going to be a fantastic Autumn at Matalan this year.

Val’s kids line

7 Jan

If your child has sensory problems then take a look and read this.
As some of you already know my son suffers a great deal with sensory problems and most are to do with touch. He can become very upset if he is uncomfortable in the clothing he is wearing. Looking though the net I came across this wonderful site’ a god send to parents. Val’s kids line. This site offers clothing that are sonsory weighted. They deliver all over the world and there prices are so fair and not over priced. And best off they are having a sale! The clothing line is so well designed there were a number of items I liked and can see myself ordering.
