Lollibop – The Festival Just For Kids

27 Aug

20120826-222149.jpg

The Lollibop Festival is a magnificent 3-day event that is the only one of its kind!

What’s different about this festival from all others, is that it’s solely dedicated to the the little boppers of today (AKA the kids)! This basically means that if you’re between the ages of 0-10 years, then you’re gonna love it! Lollibop is Located within “Regents Park” one of London’s Royal Parks that also plays host to the Famous London Zoo! Lollibop is a child’s paradise, it’s been filled with magic, the type that creates long lasting magical memories for kids big and small

20120827-005958.jpg

We decided to check it out on the Saturday which is day 2 of this exciting 3 day event. I took the toddler and my daughter Alice-Sara wheres Little man enjoyed a days gardening with his dad instead. His that bit to old for Lollibop and given he knows this and likes to stick to the “Rules” he protested from the onset.

My sister also came along with my 2-year-old niece Amy. It’s nice when Harley gets to spend time with his cousin as they are both so close in age with just a mere 10 weeks between them. They’re great company for one another even if they do get into a little mischief every now and then!

The days plan basically consisted of leaving early to ensure our arrival at the Lollibop festival for when it opened! However, this simple plan was shattered when I was left running around like a headless chicken looking for odds and ends that I needed to take with me all while the toddler indulged in huge paddy thrashing around on the floor by my feet.

Then just when I thought nothing else could possibly go wrong Little man starts having a meltdown over his brother touching his things. I couldn’t just leave his dad dealing with it all, So in the end I didn’t actually get going till the afternoon! Thankfully South east London isn’t Wales so travelling didn’t prove to be much of a problem, even if we did have pushchairs on the not so child friendly London Underground!

This was our second year attending this festival which was now in its third year. Last year myself and sister just took the toddlers and despite there being one or two little things that needed a little ironing out, it was fantastic, which explains the reason why we were looking forward to discovering just what they had planed this time around.

It was over 90 degree heat that hit London that Saturday and the walk from the station to The Lollibop itself was anything but jolly! Last year the festival was set up in an area of the park that was much closer to the Regents Park entrance. This year however, it was being held much further within the parks grounds. This meant that regardless of the station you arrived at, you were still in for one hell of a walk as the nearest station to the Lollibop is at least 15 minutes walk away. At a guess I’d say that the move may have had something to do with the Olympics because when walking past last years plot I noticed it was occupied by a couple of Olympic mascots alongside hundreds of tourist snapping away at their cameras.

After a long walk through the park in what can only be described as deadly uncomfortable heat, we finally reached destination Lollibop! As expected there was no queuing to be done, what with it being the afternoon we strolled in no problem. Once inside I noticed how this years event was much larger than that of the previous one. Everywhere you turned something magical was taking place! There was clean toilets stocked with tissue at every corner of the park, plus dedicated areas to park up and leave your buggy. The area had been well decorated transforming this park space into a brightly coloured magical children’s kingdom. Large coloured flags hung from tall white beams that had been hoisted up high into the blue skies above, while pretty Bunton was draped around pretty tents, stalls and stands. All around us were hundreds of bubbles big and small floating through the air, it was magical!

As we arrived it was the sounds of the ZingZillas singing that greeted us as it roared out from the live stage that was located right in the centre of everything else making it easily accessible for all.The rest of the festival was divided into numerous different areas each hosting different shows, workshops and more. This therefore made things much easier to find.

20120827-010247.jpg

One of the great things about Lollibop is that once you have brought your ticket all the days activities are free (with the exception of food, drink and gifts). This includes all those important little things that kids just love, such as face painting and the opportunity to get themselves a child friendly air sprayed tattoo… Plus loads more besides.

Note: Queues for things such as face painting can become quite lengthy due to it’s popularity so be warned and get inline as early as you possibly can!

Lollibop, had organised some magical entertainment this year. Roald Dahl story telling, Horrible Histories, The science museum and that of the Skylanders area were particularly great for the older children and these seemed to be popular for the duration of the day.

20120827-005818.jpg

The organisers behind Lollibop had done a great job to ensure there was enough activities and workshops to keep everyone entertained. There was so much on offer and we felt quite honestly spoilt for choice. One of the first things we did was check out the Halfords riding tent where children were invited to jump on a bike or grab themselves a micro scooter to try. Next up we headed of to see Mister Maker which provided us with the perfect excuse to sit in the shade and cool down for a bit. Mister Maker did an awesome job at entertaining the children. The show last around 20 minutes and within this time he did some quick and easy crafting demonstrations while getting the kids up on their feet and participating in the fun by encouraging them to make various miming actions like pretending to paint, mixing a pot of glue or cutting out shapes. In all honesty, I think the toddlers were quite star struck as their expressions went from that of wide eyed and open mouth to twinkling eyes and giant smiles as they were overcome with excitement.

20120826-222706.jpg

Other guest that had Harley jumping up and down for joy was that of the Moshi Monsters who at one point he refused to leave. The Moshlings had also brought along their huge double decker tour bus that doubles up as a Moshi Monsters Discount shop therefore selling everything Moshi monster at cheaper prices. Nonetheless, this did pose a problem for some, especially when kids both big and small could be seen throwing themselves to the ground howling the words “I want, I want!” as their helpless parents stood red faced and close to a mental breakdown.

20120826-222550.jpg

This year there was an endless array of crafts and activities on offer. The 3ft and under area was particularly good for little ones with its extra security and fenced of location. WOW toys (one of Harley’s favourite brand of toy) had a great tent that was full of WOW toys for the children to play with while parents were offered the opportunity to grab a beanbag in the shade. I don’t doubt Harley recognised the WOW area from last year when I had no choice but to carry him out kicking and screaming when it was time to move on. This year both Harley and Amy had loads of fun getting to grips with the many different WOW toys on offer and thankfully didn’t do a repeat of last year when it was time to leave.

20120826-222343.jpg

This years Lollibop was home to many different children’s tv characters and Harley loved getting to see them all. We even run into the super cute Haribo teddy as he walked around the area handing out sweets to anyone who came his way. We then meet the one and only Titan the Robot and this for me has to be the highlight of the day. This clever futuristic robot was everything you would expect from a robot and more. There was never anything this brilliant when I was a kid! All we got was my dad dressed head to toe in cardboard boxes with bottle tops stuck all over him. Titan was absolutely massive and would have made my 6ft odd brother look a midget. He was also kinda humorous as he let out some very comical one liners. As for my my daughter, she couldn’t get enough of him and therefore ended up chasing him around the park taking numerous pictures for her very own blog

20120826-222820.jpg

The live stage offered a wealth of entertainment With a number of great acts such as Mr men and ZingZillas taking to the stage. It was having CBeebies presenter Alex alongside the lovely Katie from the CBeebies show” I can Cook” that really worked up the crowd resulting in a sea of families smiling and dancing till the end.

Alice-Sara was also pleased to see Dick and Dom do their thing up on the main stage, and eagerly participated with all the games that were played.

20120827-010635.jpg

Of course We were never going to fit everything in given we had missed out on the mornings goings on, but we still manage to squeeze in a reasonable amount. We finished a great afternoon by way of chilling out on a couple of toadstools over at the enchanted forest where we all enjoyed story time with the loveable Waybloo.

20120826-222932.jpg

So, there you have it! The Lollibop was a success. It was bigger and better than the last, a day that I’m sure both myself and the children will remember forever more. With this do you really need to ask the question… “would you recommend the lollibop festival to others ?” My answer… Hell Yer!

If you missed out on the Lollibop this summer then check out the Lollibop Mini Disco due to kick off this October half term (2012) at Ministry of Sound London. You can grab Earlybird tickets for just a tenner per person. Check the Lollibop website that has all the information you need.

Lastly I’ve made a little list of tips you may want to consider if attending the Lollibop Festival in 2013. I’ve also included information relating to the Lollibop’s Disability Access Policy and how these services were provided this year (2012).

Things to consider if visiting the Lollibop:

Arrive early to avoid long queues at the face painting stand.

Check the whether forecast and ensure you pack appropriate supplies for the day. The Lollibop is a festival that takes place during the summer month of August so you stand a good chance of sunshine. Bottled water, plenty of sun protection and sun hats for all are therefore essential. I’d personally advise that you also pop in your bag a suitable lightweight waterproof jacket & some wellies! After all this is London we’re talking about.

Food isn’t cheap but is reasonably priced in comparison to other festivals.

Gifts are reasonably priced with Helium balloons costing around £5.

If the Festival remains in the same area of the park next year you will need to remember that this is a fair walk from the nearest tube station which is Camden town.

Toilet facilities are good so please, there is no need to bring your own
loo roll.

You can check out all the latest updates over on the Lollibop Facebook Page or if twitter is more your thing you can also find them there too!

Autism & Disability Friendly?

Little man didn’t come along but I did check out the Website earlier on in the year on what accommodations would be made for those with disabilities. I also tried my best to follow this up on the day.

Gaining Access To Disabled Facilities: In-order to fully access the disabled facilities a form had to be downloaded, completed and emailed back to the lollibop team. A photocopy of DLA letter or similar must be forwarded to the the Lollibop team with application. This is a good idea in many respects as it allows organisers a way of ensuring disabled peoples needs are fully met. This system also stops people abusing the facilities provided. However this also means you need your forms submitted pretty quickly normally within a few weeks of purchasing your tickets. The final date for submitting a form this year was the 6th of August meaning those with disabilities, would not be able to enjoy spontaneity and would not be able to access the disabled facilities if turning up and buying a ticket on the day.

The Facilities on offer:
LolliBop provides facilities to those with disabilities within that of its own dedicated area “The Arena” A free carer/PA ticket where required can also be provided to ensure the day is both enjoyable and comfortable for those with disabilities. Note: Carer/PA tickets need to be applied for using the form discussed above.

A viewing platform is available at the LolliBop Live Stage so all can enjoy the performances on offer. As great as this seems Lollibop do have a strict one plus one policy (disabled customer + their carer/PA) and its noted that Carer/PA’s may be asked to leave the platform when it is busy to avoid overcrowding. Note the above isn’t great for the single mum with an autistic child and 2 siblings in tow. The parent/carer would struggle if they were unable to leave the two smaller children to be of assistance to the child on the spectrum. A child like mine would be overly anxious to leave their mothers side. However, I do understand why the Lollibop are imposing these rule and I’m unsure If accommodations can be made in these situations as they may well have been this year.

General Notes: All disabled customers are welcome at Regent’s Park, but as it is a greenfield site there are sections of the arena that have uneven ground meaning that sometimes, access is difficult. Lollibop do note that stewards however, will be around to assist those having any difficulties.

I’ve been advised by a mother of a child with disabilities, that the toilet facilities were of a great standard.

Disabled Parking is allocated to the Blue badge holder on a first come first serve basis.

Lollibop Say… We will provide access to the viewing platform for all customers that need use of this facility. This includes, though not exclusively, wheelchair users, customers who are unable to stand for long periods, customers unable to be in large crowds and customers with invisible disabilities.

The music was quite loud as one would expect. However we discovered that ear defenders were on Sale at the official merchandise stall and these were really fairly priced. Despite Little man not attending we brought some ear defenders for Harley as his quite sensitive to loud noise/music.

Upcoming Competition

What’s more I decided to buy an extra set of children’s ear defenders to offer on my blog as a prize. These are great for any child attending a festival but are used a great deal on a daily basis for the child with SPD or ASD. The ear defenders along with a few other pieces will ran as a competition tomorrow.

Festival boho hair with Osis

30 Jul

You know me, I love a good competition especially a creative one.

I also love a good festival and I have a number line up to visit this summer, including the lollibop & that of the wilderness, hence why this competition was perfect for me.

All I had to do was design the perfect festival hair style and Alice-Sara was more than willing to be my mini model.

For me good festival hair is a style that’s pretty but messy. It’s girly boho waves that don’t look like you tried to hard.

Another great aspect that makes perfect festival hair is the accessories used to dress it up. You should be able to use different accessories to create a number of different looks without actually having to restyle the hair at all. Don’t forget many festivals last an entire weekend and hair should look great each day your there.

This is what I’ve tried to demonstrate in my entry. I’ve created one simple style and dressed it up with different accessories to create a number of different looks to see you through an entire weekends festival.

The style: Pretty messy loose boho waves.

20120730-172907.jpg

My daughter has very long hair so I brushed and separated the hair into sections with clips and grips. I then used heated tongs to curl the hair doing small sections at a time until the entire head was complete.

Alice-Sara has beautiful thick hair so I took some of the hair from the back and pinned this slightly higher as to create a waterfall effect.

20120730-175009.jpg

I then used small purple flowers attached to twisty wire and placed randomly within the hair.

Lastly I used a flower and ribbon head piece to give it a real enchanted boho pixie effect and of course a pretty dress and pair of pixie wings to match.

Note… This style is perfect for younger festival goers, yet drop the outfit and you also have the perfect festival hair regardless of age.

20120730-180135.jpg

20120730-180257.jpg

As you can tell from the photos a bit of face paint, glitter and a few gems gives the look a really funky boho look.

20120730-180501.jpg

20120730-180555.jpg

20120730-180859.jpg

Now as promised, without having to restyle the hair I created some other festival looks with the use of accessories alone.

By removing the flower headpiece and those pretty flowers placed randomly within the hair, I then replaced with a sparkly scarf tired around the middle of the head. Now you have yourself a really cool relaxed hippy chick look.

20120730-181240.jpg

Then by removing the scarf and adding a cute butterfly headpiece you get this relaxed boho festival look…

20120730-181416.jpg

20120730-181526.jpg

It’s easy to dress your festival hair up to take it from day to night, why not dress your curls ready for a masked ball.

20120730-181814.jpg

Or add a flashing light hair clip to the front of your hair, your guaranteed not to be missed

20120730-182036.jpg

Now how to create the look. Curl hair before arriving at you destination even if camping your not going to find a plug socket at a festival. There are many products you can use but how about trying the new Schwarzopf Osis range.

Wash hair the day before, curls take better when hair hasn’t just been washed. For perfect boho curls work in some Osis Curl me soft £11.05 then get curling with some heated tongs. This will give fantastic curl definition without stuffiness.

Once complete use some Osis Dust it £12.95 worked into hands and applied to the ends of the hair to creat that perfect messy vibe with a non-greasy finish. Your curls will look beautiful and shimmering gorgeous.

Just to make sure the whole thing remains in place, spray some Osis formation freeze £9.25 over your bouncy boho curls for maximum hold and effect.

This post is my entry into the Osis competition

#Win Family Tickets For The Fabulous Lollibop Festival

10 Jul

20120710-140455.jpg

It’s almost that time again for this years Big Bash For Little People… The amazing Lollibop.

I’ve seriously been looking forward to next months Lollibop Festival, so much so, there is a danger that I’m more excited about it than the children.

Myself and sister attended last years event along with our toddlers. I have stored away in my mind, the wonderful memory that was the look on my little Harley’s face when he came face to face with all his idols such as Bob the Builder, George Pig and Raster Mouse to name just a few.

Last week I posted an update on this years line up and if you’ve already checked it out then you will know where I’m coming from when I declare it be… Totally Fabulous and worth getting extremely excited about.

Last year, I found that despite the festival heaving with little partygoers everyone got well looked after. The festival is totally accessible for those with disabilities, it even has a raised platform with wheelchair access. which has been directed towards the main stage. This therefore means everyone gets to see their favourite children’s characters over the sea of heads which is formed the crowd. This doesn’t just apply to those in wheelchairs but also those children with autism or sensory processing disorder who cant do the whole crowd thing (normally resulting in meltdowns). Despite the fact little man didn’t attend last year I was confident that the lollibop was ensuring all children and families the time of their lives.

20120710-140543.jpg

There is just so much to do and see while attending Lollibop that if I went through everything this post would simply never end.

20120710-140653.jpg

So… Below I have posted a mini update highlighting some of the exciting surprises in store for this years little festival goers.

The 2012 Lollibop festival for little ones

4 Jul

20120704-221851.jpg

So I went last year with the toddler and it was an absolute blast… Now it’s almost that time again… Time for the Lollibop, the kids festival that has it all.

I blogged earlier in the year to alert all readers that the early bird tickets went on sale, now I can’t quite believe that it’s almost here already!

Last years festival was amazing, I went along with my sister and we both took along out toddlers. Seriously, it was a toddlers paradise. I had to drag Harley kicking and screaming when it was time to leave… He loved it.

If you haven’t got your tickets to this years Lollibop at Regents park then you just may want to after reading the updated line up below.

LolliBop, in partnership with John Lewis, is returning to Regent’s Park this summer, with a line up designed to delight mini festival goers. Billed as The Big Bash for Little People, the event takes place between August 17 and 19 and is aimed at children up to the age of 10.

The ‘LolliBop Live’ stage will play host to some of the hottest names in kids entertainment with musical performances from the likes of the ZingZilla’s, Jassa Aluwahlia (Art Attack) and The Mr Men & Little Miss Party Roadshow. TV favourites Dick and Dom will also take to the stage to entertain crowds with their unique blend of music and games.

20120704-221955.jpg

Partying with the children at the Lollibop Mini Disco – Ministry of Sound

16 Feb

The 12th February 2012, I finally get my foot in a nightclub for the first time in what feels like forever. Once inside, its fair to say, that, yes, I did swing my pants on the dance floor… Ministry Style! So, I’m officially back on the club scene, only, not in the way one would think … it’s in the company of my children… all three of them!

Who, would believe it if I told them I’d been clubbing it up at London’s Ministry of Sound, Living it up on the dance floor, beside none other than my 11, 9 and 2-year-old? Well, I’m guessing you’d think I was either one crazy lady who sneaks her children out in her handbag at the weekend, or maybe I’m just a delusional mess!

Actually, this mum is none of the above, in fact, this was an occasion for the children. As mentioned on the blog early last month, Lollibop, (the guys behind the “Must attend” festival of the year, designed solely for teeny boppers) would be bringing children a half term treat in way of the Lollibop Mini Disco, and of course this mum was heading straight for it!

There were no hundreds of sweaty ravers, waving lighters in the air, while downing vodka chasers, instead I danced amongst hundreds of tiny feet and waving hands, while drinking Ribina from a straw…. and loved it!

The Mini Disco had been created around children between the ages of 3-10 and although only one of my children fits the bill (Alice-Sara is nine) I decided to take Harley 2 and after much deliberation, Little man (aka a boy with aspergers) aged 11, along for the ride too.

I really wasn’t sure if it would appeal to the Little man and more importantly, how he would deal with the sensory input, example being, the crowds, noise, lack of light etc… Although Little man does have a degree of sensory sensitivities, that have at times caused a degree of distress, Little man is a huge fan of music and the louder the better! He also loves the sensations created by the vibrations of loud music and is crazy for disco lighting and special effects (meaning the smoke machine went down a treat)! I was hoping his sensory seeking ways would drown out any sensitivities, which, largely, they did! Then there is the fact that I want to be able to do things as a family, especially when time is against us, what with the half term lasting just one week and all that!  (see below Harley holding Scooby-Doo’s hand)

I wasn’t to concerned about the toddler, the fact Scooby Doo would be making an appearance, kinda sealed the deal for me!

The Disco kicked off at midday promising to provide five fun-filled hours of music, entertainment, special appearances and an array of specially designed and well thought out activities, such as Beatboxing, hula-hooping, story telling, bubble shows, magic and more besides. At set intervals throughout the day, a well-known Celebrity face graced us with his presence as he strolled onto the dance floor and when Mini boppers caught sight of him, they pelted themselves in his direction like crazed fans! Oh yes, Scooby Doo was extremely popular with all, including my “NOW” Scooby obsessed 2-year old. Seriously, at one stage, I became a tad worried he would find himself arrested for stalking this loveable dog who kindly took it in his stride, giving Little Harley lots of attention while engaging in a dance or two.

I felt that there was something for everyone, what with two main rooms, one more chilled and relaxed but just as fun in a host of ways, and the other room… this was were you came to swing your pants (your pull ups in the toddlers case)! Plus there was plenty of loud music resulting in a vibrating buzz throughout one’s body, to my Little man’s delight.

There was also a large baby changing/feeding area which if I remember rightly, is actually the clubs chill out lounge on a busy weekend. Having kicked back in it and chilled on occasions, it admittedly seemed a tad weird, seeing it filled with baby changing mats and a centre table filled to the rim with supplies (nappies, wipes…you name it)!

At 4 pm the children went dashing into the main room as TVs duo ‘Dick and Dom‘ took to the decks, doing what I can only describe as a brilliant job of engaging party goers young and old! what with there dancing games to a rather funky remix of “Postman Pat” Alice-Sara, my daughter instantly fought her way to the front, eager to be fully involved in all these guys had to offer. My youngest wasn’t to be held back either, as he jumped about energetically doing his thing and hopefully wearing himself out for the night ahead. Of course, what with the extent of tiny tots and their funky dancing, Little man my eldest stood with me on the sidelines looking in, though enjoying himself all the same.

The event was a delightful half term treat for what was very soon to become three very bored children. However, despite our enjoyment, it doesn’t have a patch on the main event… The Lollibop festival which is due to kick off this summer. I sure as hell cannot wait, maybe I  enjoyed it more than the toddler, though actually… this would be a hard task to undertake… he was bowled over by the likes of Bob the Builder, George pig, Ben & Holly and a host of others at last years event!

Let’s bring on the sunshine and get ready for the big one! Click HERE for Lollibop early bird tickets. Visit the Lollibop Facebook page for all the latest news and line up for this years event.

Lollibop’s Mini Disco at the Ministry of Sound London 2012

10 Jan

Last year was a lot of fun in the ‘Boy with Aspergers’ household! We got invited to some pretty amazing events, one of the best being the ‘Lollibop’s Big Bash For Little People’ back in August, where me and Harley (Little man’s baby bro) were lucky enough to obtain V.I.P tickets. The festival, held at London’s Regents Park, was an awesome summer spectacular, organised completely around tenny boppers, all the CBeebies favourites were present, as well as others, such as, Peppa & George pig & Ben & Holly from the Magical kingdom. A truly brilliant day was had by all and we just can’t wait for this years Lollibop festival.

However, in the meantime, the organisers of this magical event have pulled together something very exciting for the coming half term… Lollibop’s Mini Disco, being held at the not so mini Ministry of Sound London.

How can this mummy really not get excited about such a thing… Ministry of Sound holding an event for the littlest of ravers, whoopee… I have spent my fair share of time dancing to the sounds of the biggest club anthems under this night clubs famous roof, I cannot wait to see the little ones grace its dance floor.

The team behind the biggest kids event of summer 2011, are now bringing us this new one-off, very exciting half-term treat to the doors of the famous Ministry of Sound this coming February 2012.

The disco is guaranteed to keep children aged 3-10 years entertained, what with special guest appearances from the likes of Scooby Doo and award-winning children’s entertainer, Allin Kempthorne, how can it not? That’s not all, the event will delight little ones with its array of workshops and activities, such as Beat Box lessons, allowing older attendees to learn a new skill that is bond to blow the socks of their super impressed school mates when they return back to school following the half term break (not to sure the teachers will be impressed, but hay hoo)! If beat boxing really isn’t your child’s idea of fun, there is so much more to choose from, such as, hula hoop workshops, storytelling (for those that want to chill out) bubble shows and of course, dance games ( oh, now I have visions of my daughter really getting her groove on)!

Lets not forget now… this is a party and parties require lots of music! Well, In true Ministry of Sound fashion, they’ll be plenty of dancing too when TV favourites Dick and Dom take to the decks.

So… Don’t let your little ones find out about it from somebody else (yes, I do mean that spoilt little school friend) super cool and trendy mummy’s (yes…. like me) hear these things first. Those looking for the ultimate half-term treat need look no more, as it’s my opinion that you’ve just found it!

A great 2011 for A boy with Asperger’s

21 Dec

A boy with Asperger’s 2011

At the beginning of the year I wrote a two-part post covering all the stuff that had happened during 2010 (yes, seriously this took two post and most of it was nothing but bad happenings). So, looking back through 2011 and realising just what an amazing year’s blogging I’ve had, I just had to do it all again.

So here it is, the busiest year on the blog so far, A boy with Asperger’s 2011

January: Not the best month to be honest, we finally get that all important statement of special educational needs for Little man, only toilet paper would have been worth more. Nonetheless we fight to the depths of the earth and it’s amended later in the year and thankfully contains everything he needs thanks to those all important independent assessments & reports.

February: We finally get some good news, which I document in the post, “The end of a chapter” The mainstream school in-which Little man used to attend finally holds up their hands and we get that all important apology in writing, we therefore settle on the Disability discrimination case only weeks before the tribunal hearing. Another great high to February was the invite I received from Cadbury that saw me and a friend attend an excellent Adult only event (no not in that way) we actually tried to set world records doing normal household chores with a twist (making a bed, unravelling toilet rolls and more besides). This was also the month that I got to interview Colin an adult with Asperger’s who had a very interesting message for Mr Cameron.

March: This was a terrible month, the month that saw my eldest Little man (AKA, A boy with Aspergers) get punched in the stomach by a much older youth of eighteen, while playing at the park with a friend and his mother. Little man was just ten at the time and had said “The wrong thing” to a group of older kids, you can read the post “How could that hurt my little boy” for the full story. March was also the month I shared my concerns on the pending Green paper in the post “Aspirations or clever financial alterations

April: I’m contacted by the lovely Anna Kennedy in regards to her ‘Autism and bullying’ campaign, as a result of this little man appears in an ITV news report which I wrote about in the post “Little man’s television debut” which was perfect timing, what with it being autism awareness month. I also highlight how appearing on the television went to his head a little resulting in him asking everyone and anyone “Do you know who I am”

May: It was this month I wrote one of my favourite post to date “I’m no Vicky Pallord” I also discover that I’m nominated for a Mad blog award shortlisted in two categories, “Most inspiring blog” & “Blogger of the year”

June: Brings with it a fresh start for the Little man when the local LEA crave in before yet another tribunal, agreeing his place at his independent special school for children with autism and aspergers. This was also a really exciting month in the world of blogging, I was featured in two local papers, making front page news in “The Southlondon press” with the Headline “Mum sets blogging standard” & I was also featured in the “Newshopper” both highlighting the news that I had become a finalist in the Mad blog awards 2011. I also got to attend my first ever Cybermummy (blogging conference) and with it the blog received it’s first ever sponsor Londontown.com who paid for me to stay in a beautiful hotel on the night of the conference.

Nonetheless, although the above is all fabulously exciting, June was also a very emotional & overwhelming month, what with Little man adapting to his new routine and little sleep, it resulted in me writing this very open and honest post “falling apart

July: This was the month I started the Santa’s little helpers feature resulting in me working with some pretty spectacular brands, we were also invited to the multimedia screening of Mr Poppers penguins in London’s , Leicester Square. Alice-Sara brings her friend who are both  excited by the odd celeb spot. In the middle of the month me and the children attend the Pandemonium festival in Northampton to celebrate the release of kung-fo panda 2 as VIP guest of Cadbury. The children get to test the new mini games, Harley becomes obsessed by the panda himself and we eat lunch next to the ambassador of china (Yer, I was praying that Little man didn’t treat the guy and his family to a demonstration of a meltdown, “Asperger’s style”)! Myself and Harley my youngest also attended the Boots bump to Baby event in London’s beautiful Haymarket hotel where Harley took a shine to the lovely Rachel Stevens and the boots clothing range (from the pic below who would think his only 18 months here). July is also the month I treat readers to an up-date on the amazing progress Little man is making at his new school.

August: A busy yet crazy month as I celebrate the publishing of my three page article in the SEN publication (please check it out by clicking HERE if you haven’t already). Myself, youngest Harley, sister and her daughter get invited to the tots event of the year, “The lollibob” where we go VIP and the kids have a blast meeting the likes of Bob the builder, Peppa pig and Ben and Holly from the Little Kingdom.

August was also the month that saw chaos unfold in the devastating London riots. I organised a Lewisham riot cleanup on twitter with the use of the hash tag #lewishamriotclean and from then on everything went a little mad, what with being interviewed for the BBC breakfast show by Gabby in the back of a taxi on the way to Lewisham following a sleepless night due to the sounds of rioters looting the supermarket directly across the road. Then as myself and Little man (yes, he cleaned Lewisham too) stood in Lewisham with a dust pan and brush waiting for fellow locals who I’d rounded up with the help of social media to join us, I’m shocked to discover the BBC are there to greet us. Yes, they interviewed me and followed my progress throughout the day, I later cringed watching myself on the 6pm news, in a report that seemed to go on for ever. My use of the quote “Lewisham is cleaner than usual” following the councils own operation seem to be something of a hit and spread across the papers and internet like wide fire! The images of Little man clearing up outside JD Sports still melt my heart and make me mighty proud.

August saw us working with some great brands, Micro Scooter & Meccano to name just a few. Little man also has great fun testing sensory toys this month and I try to raise awareness for child mental health by opening up and writing “Just a Little girl

September: This is a month that holds some great memories for me, not only did myself and some of the other Mad blog award finalist find ourselves invited to TKMaxx London’s flagship store to choose evening dresses and accessories for the for the Mad blog awards ceremony but I also went on to win ‘Most inspiring blog 2011’ at the awards itself, which was held at the fabulous Talk-Talk experience centre in London’s Soho. Not only did I win, get to meet a host of other fab bloggers but I also experienced a great working relationship with my mad blog awards sponsor ‘OptiBac Probiotics‘.

With all the above going on I really don’t know how I managed to squash in one of my most popular post on the blog to date, “How well do you really know your child’s teacher

October: was a month that saw the blog working with some pretty big brands such as Sainsburys & Argos, I make two local papers again having been interviewed by the SouthLondon Press and the Newshopper on winning a Mad blog award! Little man takes over the blog, (well, kind of, he finally says how he feels in his first interview, for the blog) where he talks about his Asperger’s, discrimination, bullying, feeling different and acceptance, click Here to read.

November: I’m delighted to become a judge at the BBC Christmas ideal home show for the face of Argos competition which was an amazing experience. I’m invited to lunch by Sainsbury’s at the BBC NEC Winter food show where I also get to watch a live Master chef cook off, I have a great time and meet some awesome people at Liberty’s London when I attend a charity event and I also start working with the wonderful ‘John Crane’ and ‘When I was a kid’ check out the post ‘Joining Forces‘!

It was in November I wrote the post “Merlin’s Magical wand helping children benefit from the magic, well that is unless they have autism” which had 2,000 hits within a few hours and is the busiest post of 2011!

December: The last month of ‘Santa’s Little helpers’ I therefore launch the ‘Santa’s Little helpers, the big christmas countdown’ we feature loads of fantastic competitions with awesome prizes up for grabs. I also get invited onboard P&O ferries to take a trip from Dover to Calais alongside the lovely “Romanian mum where we shop till we drop, and to end such a fabulous year’s blogging, I’m lucky enough to be invited by the fabulous Tots100, to it’s big Christmas party at Butlin’s Bognor Regis where myself, friend and children get to stay in the beautiful Ocean hotel, though Little man finds the change a bit hard to bear.

Wow, there it is, what a year!

There’s been some massive ups and as you can expect one or two downs (what do you expect, this isn’t a fairy tale you know!) But you have to admit, it’s a massive improvement from 2010 that sadly along with 2009 saw much stress and heartache, which just proves, you never know what’s lurking around the corner!

I really do hope that ‘A boy with Asperger’s’ has provide readers with smiles, laughs, entertainment, inspiration, awareness and more!

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all my amazing loyal readers
We love yer!
