Tips For Parents Of Tactile Defensive Children (Part 1 – Hygiene Problems)

6 Feb

Many children On the autism spectrum have some degree of sensory integration difficulties. As a parent of a child diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome with accompanying sensory integration problems, I know just how difficult some situations can become for both parent and child.

One of the senses in particular that little man has problems with Is that of his tactile sense, hypersensitivity to touch/tactile input. As his aged with appropriate Interventions Little man is slowly learning different types of coping strategies to deal with such difficulties.

As a child and still to some extent, I myself was very tactile defensive growing up. As a child with OCD I also developed compulsions and rituals that involved me having to touch certain textures that I didn’t like, a required number of times in order to stop bad things happening. This itself made my sensory defensiveness very hard for others to spot!

I guess the above means that to certain degree I have that much of a better understanding of little mans difficulties within the area of tactile hypersensitivity. Nonetheless, there was areas of difficulty for little man that I had never experienced and to some extent would have never related both the symptom and associated behaviour together. A good example of this would be little man’s reluctance to bath. It took a while for me to realise that it wasn’t the fact he was lazy with no desire to wash, but it was instead the way his body felt when getting out off the bath (wrinkly tight skin, the feeling of wetness within certain areas of the body etc…).

20130206-055806.jpg

So, that’s why today I would like to share some of the tips and strategies I have learnt, that help my little man with some of the difficulties he experiences at the hands of tactile hypersensitivity. All these difficulties affect the area of personal hygiene.

Teeth Brushing: Little man hates brushing his teeth and will try and avoid at any cost. This is because the way his mouth feels during & following this action. He also gets rather upset that his taste buds have changed when he drinks anything shortly after brushing his teeth. Just explaining that such experiences are short lived and resolve themselves quickly, doesn’t make any difference to a child like little man. So what do you do?

20130206-060843.jpg

Tip… Buy only soft tooth brushes. I buy brushes designed for toddlers milk teeth. Its not ideal him using them at 12 years old, nonetheless, I’d rather he brushed with this than nothing at all. As well as the soft brush he also uses toothpaste designed for smaller, younger teeth. This toothpastes doesn’t give off the same sensations. They are lower or except from certain ingredients altogether, therefore avoiding any burning or ultra cooling sensation in the mouth. This also leaves little taste behind and that first drink isn’t as daunting as it was before. I know he will need to use better toothpaste as he goes into his teenage years so have therefore started to look at the different options available in terms of products… Is there actually a toothpaste designed for those with tactile defensiveness? Big gap in the market there if there isn’t! Any suggestions, please do leave them in the comment section.

Bathing: Little man will need me to start requesting he baths in the morning in order to ensure he eventually gives in on the refusal front and is in the tub come late evening. Reasons for the refusal is mainly centred around tactile sensations shortly following a swim in the tub. He understands that the feeling of wetness within certain body areas is quickly fixed with a towel but it still concerns him leading to avoidance. One of the reasons this is, is that he also hates the sensation of tight clean skin, wrinkly fingers etc… That are very present (probably more so) once you have towel dried.

Tips: I must first add, that little man actually loves the shower, sadly we don’t have one and can not afford a shower fitment over our bath. So, why is it different and why might a shower be a better option for your tactile defensive child? Well… the water is aimed downwards in a continuous flowing motion, there is little opportunity for water to really sit on skin in large amounts. When showering the body has not been submerged in water. This therefore removes that sensation of tightness to the skin and wrinkly fingers and toes.

Little man again loves swimming and this itself confused me. Later, I actually discovered he liked the smell of Chlorine and thought that it cleansed his skin of dirt, meaning he could avoid a bath later on at home lol. The fact there is a shower at the swimming baths is another big Incentive to swim. He will protest on an evening his been swimming, that he don’t need the bath his been in the chlorine filled pool plus showered too! For me it was more reason to get him in that bath.

20130206-060940.jpg

Good products… I never give little man soap to use. This itself makes the skin super tight and squeaky clean, sending him loopy. I myself, don’t use soap for the dislike of tightness plus sensitive skin. We instead use a good sensitive body wash with little fragrance. But saying this Little man also seeks out certain smells and some actually help encourage him to bath. The boy loves lush and colour changing bath bombs can have him running to the bathroom. These are normally quite highly fragranced so I am pleased they are all natural handmade products with many of them correcting some of the tactile sensations he develops.

Recently we discovered a product from Olay that is a body wash with added body lotion helping to lock in moisture therefore removing the dry, tight sensation. It seems weird as body lotion is something we apply following a bath but it does really work.

DIY… When we recently ran out of our Olay product sent from the gods, and I couldn’t find it anywhere in the shops, I decided to get all DIY! I added some Johnson’s Baby Lotion to a bottle of Simple body wash and can you believe it? It really did work! Excluding the odd oily blob of floating mixture in the bath, its actually a really clever and effective solution.

So… Overall use good products to help reduce sensations, apply good body creams and lotions following a bath too.

Use a good quality towel that isn’t hard or stiff. If you have a tumble dryer then use it to keep towels fluffy and warm.

Make bath times fun and sensory inviting with water colour changers, bath paint and our favourite… Crazy Soap.

If you have a shower, give your child the option. Its my experience that a shower is less likely to bring on such extreme feelings of tactile discomfort.

Hand-washing: Little man needs constant prompts to wash his hands. Sometimes seeing is believing so if he can’t see dirt he thinks there must be no germs so no need to wash them. Again he hates the sensation of wet hands or those that feel funny after using certain soaps or hand wash. Other times little man just plain forgets, especially after using the toilet.

Tips….

Prove It: I used an ultraviolet light to reveal the unseen germs on little mans hands…. After all education is important for any child. I also directed him to online youtube videos and resources that explain the differences about dirt and unseen germs (what you can’t see really can hurt you). However, for you a more gentle approach maybe necessary. Children on the autism spectrum can be easily frightened and become over obsessive about subjects, therefore worrying about contamination and then as a result, engage in too much hand-washing! You know your child best!

Visual clues: Just a sign on the toilet wall that states “Now Please Wash Your Hands” that is visible when your child goes to pull the chain, can be enough to jog their memory and have them running to the bath room sink. We had one of them cute posters in a cartoon format that read pretty much the same reminder.

The Right Handwash & Hand-cream: A good handwash instead of soap. Little man then applies a hand cream to replace moisture back into the skin correcting the sensation of tightness. Buy your child a pocket travel size hand cream to take out and about with them, including school.

Child Friendly Hand Sanitisers: Sometimes when out and about your child may refuse to use a public washroom sink for a string of reasons like the horrid liquid in the soap dispensers or a fear of the electronic hand fans (used to scare Little man rotten). On the market there are now really good alcohol free Hands sanitisers (we have reviewed a few here on the blog). These, followed by the application of travel sized hand cream could be the answer.

Nail clipping & Cleaning: By far one of Little man’s worst feared hygiene task. It’s highly embarrassing for your child to have dirty nails and it’s also highly embarrassing for you, the parent that your child has such dirty nails. Little man just finds the sensation of freshly cut nails totally unbearable. He also freaks out when cleaning instruments are used, saying it makes him feel fuzzy. Now, I can share some tips I’ve been given but sadly we are still struggling. Nonetheless, you may have more success. If you have any tips of your own, that you feel myself and the Little man could benefit from then please leave a comment below.

Tips: Crystal nail files can help! I have a Leighton Denny glass file and its gentle and kinder to nails. Still its a struggle for use as he still refuses, freaks out and dislikes the cleaning process that you need to undertake first.

Allow your child to clip and clean nails themselves. Your child then has better control over how short to cut them and the sensations felt with differing lengths. Again we still struggle (Only ever provide such an option to older children.)

Incentives aka good old bribery. Not really a tip as such and quite bad advise but something I admit resorting to. Funny enough he still often doesn’t give in, even if I’m offering something exciting.

Try nail brushes for cleaning. We have a very nice soft nail brush with extra fine bristles that Little man is leaning to tolerate.

Remember, don’t cut too short. If the feeling of freshly cut nails is really overpowering, you will get nowhere near them with the clippers next time. Plus if you catch the skin you may as well forget ever trying again… Not gonna happen!

Try nail scissors instead of clippers. These don’t cut so bluntly decreasing the sensation that’s felt following the task.

Warning: Don’t ever, ever, even try and cut your child’s nails while they are sleeping! One minute he was snoring, I was clipping away thinking “Gotcha Now” When the next thing I knew the clippers were on the floor and I was following them with a freshly punched nose. Not his fault, he acted on impulse having been woken due to a sensation he finds horrific! Yes, just because they are in the land of nod doesn’t mean the brain doesn’t produce messages of uncomfortable tactile sensations!

Homemade Vintage Christmas Gifts

11 Dec

Christmas is a really expensive time. There are so many gifts to buy which adds up to a considerable amount of money.

However, Not everything has to cost the earth. We Can actually give really special gifts In a cost-effective way.

It’s all about being creative and using your resources. Plus homemade gifts can be much more special. Its shows that you put thought into your gift and that means more than the price tag.

Here we have a simple upcycle gift that’s perfect for the lady who loves everything vintage and shabby chic.

Vintage inspired Jewellery stand made with vintage Queen Ann Tea set

Tea set brought from Auction as part of a huge box full of china for £3

20121214-185419.jpg

First choose a selection of vintage style saucers and side plates these must descend in size (around 3 is good) you will also need a tea cup and 2 Miniature Glasses for example… Sherry glasses.

Other items you will need is a glue brush and some good strong Adhesive (I’m using Mosaic adhesive).

Make sure all your saucers, glasses and tea cup are clean. Also be sure to check your chosen china isn’t some vintage Antique find that’s worth a small fortune.

20121214-175219.jpg

Right now to assemble your jewellery stand.

Step one… Start with the largest of your 3 plates and chose a glass. Stand your glass upside down and glue around the the bottom of your glass. Now carefully place your saucer/plate decorated side down, on top of the base of the glass being sure to place the base in the centre.

20121214-175356.jpg

Be patient and hold firmly for a few minutes.

20121214-175523.jpg

Wipe of any excess glue that may have come out from the sides of your glass onto your saucer.

Step two… Once you feel the plate is now strong enough stand up the right way so it looks as though the glass is just stood in the centre of your side plate. Now very carefully glue around the glasses rim and place your second plate that is smaller than your first on top of the glass. This time you are gluing the glass to the centre base of the plate. Again hold firmly and wipe of any excess glue.

20121214-181451.jpg

20121214-181633.jpg

Step 3… Once your plate is strong enough take your second glass and add the glue to the rim of the glass. Now place onto the centre of your plate. This can only be stuck to the decorated side of your plate. Hold and wipe of excess glue.

20121214-181820.jpg

Step 4… Now glue the rim of the same glass and place the base of your smallest saucer on top.

20121214-182019.jpg

Step 5… Lastly glue the base of your chosen tea cup and place it on top of your plates decorated side.

20121214-182204.jpg

20121214-182450.jpg

20121214-182603.jpg

To finish add a pretty vintage gift tag tired with twine and dangle from the teacups handle.

20121214-184204.jpg

Finished!

What Children With Aspergers Really Want For Christmas

5 Dec

Now, I’m not about to go all soppy by stating “That all our children with aspergers really want for Christmas is an appropriate school place and less judgement”because that wouldn’t be true.

Like any child, children with autism and Aspergers have their own interest, hobbies and Christmas wish list.

20121205-151232.jpg

Every single year in the lead up to Christmas I find that many new readers find my blog as a result of googling terms such as “What to buy the child with Aspergers for Christmas” or “Gift ideas for children with autism and sen”

Every year we do the ‘Santa’s Little Helpers’ feature where the children showcase and review some toys. This year I’ve been a bit busier than other years so the feature has been on a much lower scale than previous. However, any review that little man does tends to get pretty high page views for the above reasons.

Over the years little mans Christmas list has been anything other than average… Its featured many a bizarre item, from padlocks to safes, batteries to working shop tills. One year we even got a request for a whole crate of fizzy drinks.

This year as he approaches his teen years the list seems somewhat more “normal” in terms of its contents. Well, that’s except for the request to hang out with Drew McIntyre his WWE idol and that of a life sized 4D simulator (needless to say both requests are somewhat out of my reach)! As you can see, Little man isn’t the type of child who scores the Argos catalog for ideas.

With this, I thought it would be interesting to pop over to my Facebook page “A boy with Aspergers” and ask some of the members there what their child with Aspergers has requested for Christmas whether this year or in past years.

Its important to remember that despite any diagnosis, all children with Aspergers have different likes and dislikes, yet unsurprising the results show lost of similarities.

Firstly – LEGO seems to be that of the biggest contender, especially when it comes to boys on the spectrum. Many will know that my little man started to discover the joys of LEGO a few years back and as a result it featured heavily on last years Christmas list and has subsequently made a return this year.

Many of the members over on the ‘A boy with Aspergers’ Facebook page state that their child has either asked for Lego StarWars, Lego Hero’s or just LEGO full stop.

One member told me “Anytime people ask my son what present he wants for any occasions they will get the answer in number form. Because my son’s world revolves around LEGO and its not a ‘Lego truck’ its the model number 4435 or whatever the number maybe”

Other answers highlight that younger children on the spectrum have developed obsessional interests in super heroes with Batman being one child’s special interest for the past 6 years. This child’s Christmas list consists off Batman Merchandise and again LEGO.

It’s also apparent from reading members replies that as their children have aged many of the their requests have changed and now focus on technology. Xbox and PS3 appears a number of times with one member mentioning the new Book of Spells which little man is currently reviewing and thinks is wonderful.

Some members stated how their child wanted to connect with others online to play games over that of the PS3 or Xbox networks. I can relate to this as since little man got his PS3 in October for his birthday, he has discovered the joy of connecting with friends (mainly our extended family) to play against them on FIFA or WWE.

Another big contender was of course the IPad. Is it any surprise? Even I’m wishing for the latest iPad.

Most of the members on the page that took part in the discussion, are parents to boys on the spectrum but a few parents to girls were also happy to share their daughters wish list. One of the page admins shared that her daughter has actually asked for a fridge for her bedroom where another member stated that her daughter wanted money so she could bank it. Yes, this little girl wants her own farm in the middle of nowhere and is already saving for it (and no, I’m not talking about a plastic toy farm but that of an actual farm). Another little girl has asked for a unicorn pillow, slippers and a Star Wars DVD box set (which seems to be popular with both the girls and the boys).

Another item that reappeared more than once was that of spy items such as spy pens and night vision goggles. Again, I can relate as Little man is in love with a spy watch that has a dictaphone and secretly video records (yes, it does actually tell the time too)!

In terms of the more bizarre items here’s some that made me giggle…

Magnets (boy)
A Custard Doughnut (boy 5)
Feather Duster (little girl)
Farm In the Middle of Nowhere ( girl 11)
Cell Phone & Pocket Knife (boy 5)
Electric Leaf Blower (boy 6)
Pyjamas With Feet (boy 9)
To Be Just Like Santa Himself (boy)
Lottery Ticket/Scratch card (boy 7)
Fridge in bedroom (girl 10)
A white keyboard without computer (boy)

Biggest Contenders

LEGO
MOBILE PHONES
IPADS
SPY TOYS
STAR WARS
WWE
TRAIN SETS
PS3
XBOX
LAPTOPS
LASERS
HOTWHEELS
HARRY POTTER
SUPER HEROS (Batman etc)
SONIC
JAMES BOND DVDS
SKYLANDERS

Ooo… I almost forgot one… Mindcraft seems to be on everyone’s most wanted list too!

Special Thank You – This post was put together with the help from members of the Facebook page ‘A Boy With Aspergers’ Thank you so much to those who took part in the discussion.

Glow In The Dark Paintings

29 Nov

As mentioned I’m keen to get our falling down house in order and create little man a sensory room.

I’ve shared my ideas here on the blog before… Just check out this post.

As a result I was contacted by a lovely online company called Switch The Lights Off who create art that glows in the dark. They have a particular interest in autism and a percentage of each sold painting goes to the National Autistic Society.

They so kindly offered to send little man a glow in the dark painting and Alice and the toddler received a glowing door plaque each.

20121129-140807.jpg

All art is personalised and every piece is hand painted. Little man was sent a canvas painting of a funky punk sporting a fantastic Mohican. This image is aimed at teens and older children but there are a host of other images to chose from and I’m sure there is something to suit all ages and tastes.

20121129-135552.jpg

We choose for little mans image to be painted in gold so it looks great even when it isn’t glowing. When the lights are switched off the image of the punk and that of little mans name look amazing as it glows a Magnificent green.

20121129-135628.jpg

20121129-135728.jpg

Both the paintings and door signs are perfect for any child’s bedroom especially that of a sensory room. Your painting can be super charged with a UV Torch that literally has it glowing in seconds.

I love how each painting is personalised and hand painted. I admit I was sceptical at just how well these would glow but… WOW, I’m really impressed with the results.

What the brand told me (Diane & Steve from ‘Switch off the lights’ )…

“We are very passionate about these products and really want them to work.
The beauty of this artwork was that it was founded from an idea from Steve’s daughter, who wanted a painting that glowed in the dark whilst she was going to sleep.

We want to help mum’s & dad’s with their children in getting them to sleep. Most of us at one time or another have had nights where we are dropping asleep at the ends of the child’s bed, whilst little one is still wide awake.

We know it can be quite a big problem sometimes getting them to settle at night. So we hope these paintings and door plaques will benefit in some small way to help.”

These really are unique and special. Both younger and older children can enjoy a glowing piece of art work given the great selection of designs on offer.

Alice’s door plaque looks ultra trendy with her glowing name displayed on a pink plague, in a really groovy graffiti styled way! Its Sick ( or so she informs me)!

20121129-135833.jpg

Harley’s is blue and the writing style is really bold and glows fantastically.

20121129-140015.jpg

These would make a great Christmas presents for children who like that something a little bit different.

A great idea for any child’s sensory pad too… So, a fabulous gift idea for a child on the autism spectrum. Plus don’t forget, when you buy, ‘The National Autistic Society’ are given a contribution off the sales to help them to continue to do the fantastic and much needed work they carry out.

#innocentinspires When I grow up I want to be…

7 Nov

The world can be a pretty inspirational place, full of inspirational people. When the guys at innocent asked what inspired me to do what I’m doing today I made myself a cuppa and got writing.

20121107-000850.jpg

I’m not yet a budding Entrepreneur (Yes, do note my wording!) However, I am in the process of making big decisions in my life ones that will change things significantly.

I currently volunteer and I’m a full time carer for little man but this has given me time to be at home and really work on where I’m intending on going.

A lot of what I’m doing is inspired by my love of writing and I’m currently writing a book that despite its planed completion date having been and gone I’m still hard at it and very determine.

My passion for raising awareness for autism and sen is also something that has really contributed to the decisions I make today in terms of where I’ll be going from here.

I may not have fully achieved what it is I’m wanting to achieve just yet but I’m a firm believer that things only work once your 100% ready to make them happen.

I have however been working incredible hard these past 3 months so that I am able to finally share my ideas and hopefully make my business a raving success. My first product line should be introduced on line early next year and I can’t wait.

My attention was then turned to the children. I asked them “What do you want to be once your older?” my daughters answer surprised me where little mans was really expected.

Alice drew me a rather fabulous picture of her desire to become…. Wait for it… A successful blogger/writer inspired by mummy.

Alice draws herself blogging

20121106-182350.jpg

I explained that regardless of how great blogging is in most cases it doesn’t really lead to a sustainable income. That’s when she pointed out that she would write in other areas too… Maybe for Monsters High magazine. Well, I should have seen that one coming!

Little man has stuck by his plans for his big successful future for as long as I can remember. He tells me he will never work for someone, will own hotels and transport, he will be a well known businessmen a top Entrepreneur.

He may only be 12 years old but would it shock you if I told you his expressed such desires to take over the world since he was 7. I remember him telling me he inspired Richard Branson (yes, he did get that the wrong way round but its funny all the same).

Little man also shares a very adult opinion, one that many adults on the autism spectrum can likely relate too. He states that being someone with Aspergers Syndrome is likely to affect job opportunities and he would therefore rather avoid such knock backs all together. I think he ideas and opinions based on the world of work comes from a lot of what he reads. However, Little man felt he was rejected while in mainstream school… After all can you imagine your own head teacher stating you cannot be involved in school activities because your a health and safety risk?

I think my children have some amazing ideas and as their mother I’d do anything to help them achieve their goals and dreams regardless if they change from now till then.

I’ve always told my children you can be absolutely anything that you want as long as you want it enough, work hard and believe in yourself! My first job is to prove this to them by showing them just how its done.

My innocent biscuit… Yummy

What A Bummer!

5 Nov

Just a quick one…. I have a terrible tooth and earache and need to neck some Solpadelne before resting my head on my pillow… That is once my children stop terrorising me with their moaning and constant arguing. There is simply nothing worse than children’s menace like behaviour when your ill or in pain.

Well, I thought I should pop on to inform my readers that despite being lucky enough to make it to the final 10 in the “Smartest Shopper Competition” which involved having an interview with the lovely judges in London last Saturday, I sadly, didn’t go on to win.

It was a long week waiting to discover which one of us 10 finalist would be crowned the smartest shopper winning the opportunity to write a new money saving blog and 10K in prize money. I was finally put out my misery on friday some six days later. I don’t know who won. I do know a few other finalist who didn’t win but like everyone else I’m still waiting to hear who did bag this wonderful prize. I’ve heard that its being announced on Tuesday (why Tuesday and not Money I’m unsure). I just had to write this as over the weekend I’ve had some lovely messages wishing me good luck and felt I should just let my readers know.

Am I disappointed? God, of course I am… Savoo don’t know what they are missing… 😉

I wouldn’t be human if I wasn’t a bit gutted. The blog would have been a great new project for me and the fact I would have had the support of Savoo behind me would have been excellent. Then there is the money! I won’t pretend like its nothing… Because it is! I’m not well off at all and how often do You get that close to owning £10,000 in these tough economic times… Well, for me… Not often at all!

Throughout the competition I never said what I’d do with that money if I won and surprising no one asked… Not even the judges during the interview which i surprised me as I kind of expected them to, what with the competitions focus on money. I didn’t want to write about it in case I jinxed myself… Super superstitious is me!

I know it really doesn’t matter now, but I’m just going to be a tad sad and tell you anyway.

So, what would I have done with £10,000 then? Well, I knew exactly what I would have done with it.

Booked a family holiday to Disney and Universal studios, Florida. All my kids would love to holiday here but its something little man has been requesting for ages since hearing all about our neighbours adventures last summer. Despite this, he remains anxious about flying and has requested we only fly with virgin, as its owned by Richard Brandson, his idol. So I’ll continue to save for the families dream holiday.

Secondly, I would have upgraded my Mac Air as this one is playing up (though I think its only the battery which apple need to replace)!

Number 3 I’d done the rest of my Christmas shopping removing that pending stress.

Lastly and most importantly, I’d invested the rest in a new business. One I’d love to make happen in the very near future. It may now take a little longer then I wanted but I will still make it happen. How do I know? Well, simply because I’m passionate about it and believe in myself.

I don’t want to say to much, after all my ideas are not yet protected. What I will say its a fabulous idea… if I do say so myself.

Its always hard when you get so very close to something you want then it doesn’t happen. But experiences are important and like they say… everything happens for a reason!

I’m sure Savoo have found themselves a fantastic winner to work with… So very well done, whoever you are?

So… What about writing more about saving money! Well, my very clever little man who helps me save money in the supermarkets with his mental math skills and great ability to work out the best deal on the spot… has been suggesting a few new ideas and different angles (I think he thinks his my agent sometimes)! Nonetheless his suggested some good ideas backed up with some valid points and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but… I think I may just take the 12 year olds advice.

He thinks that I should still write a money saving and maybe one day create a new platform to share it!

You see… Its not all meltdowns and school exclusion. My little man is an extremely intelligent boy who would one day make the perfect business man.

So… There you have it. Here’s hoping that as one door closes another will open.

Thanks for reading & have a brilliant week.

A Comfy Treat For Mum

9 Oct

It’s nice to have a treat every now and then and given its the second year of our Santas Little Helpers feature I was asked to review some super Luxurious pyjamas.

I hold my hands up, if I’m not leaving my house then I’m living in comfy pjs. Now for this reason I do consider myself as a bit of a pyjama expert. I’ve heard people state “Oh just get me any pyjamas there only for bed” you should see the look of horror on my face when I hear that.

I love pyjamas they are my safety and comfort net. But before I go on its important to state that no… I do not go out the House in them. I can’t stand it when I spot women out and about sporting pyjamas, especially down at the school, It’s just not classy ladies.

I still want to feel comfortable when at home whether it while I’m sleeping (which I get very little off) or just lounging around the house. Everything from the fit to the material matters to me. Now I haven’t got loads of money to spend on expensive pyjamas but when I do buy some, I buy one’s that are designed to last more than one wash, ones I feel were really worth the money when I spot them sat folded in my draw a year on.

So, the pyjamas I was sent are called Cyberjammies which are sold by that of “The Pyjama Store” and they are quite simply lovely.

Cyberjammies are designed with comfort in mind and this very stylish Cabaret Pyjama Set is no exception.

Cyberjammies are designed for anyone in need of a good night’s sleep and I’m really in need of one of those.

At £45.00 you may have a mini heart attack but once these Cyberjammies arrive in there own draw string bag, you will discover that for the sheer quality and comfort they offer this isn’t so much after all. These pyjamas will last you for years (judging you don’t grow or fluctuate in weight). They are made from the softest material and both top and bottoms are 100% cotton. These are thin but somehow amazingly warm too.The trousers are the ultimate in super comfort and hang like a pyjama bottom should… Allowing your skin to breathe.

I somehow wished this was a catalogue and I could provide you with one of those little fabric attachments stuck by the image of the garment (do you remember these)? Only it is hard to put into words how nice this fabric really is. Not even the picture can display just how luxurious these are!

It just seems the more I wash them the more comfy they become. They don’t shrink, bubble or fade… They remain soft and lovely.

I do love them and feel that many other women will. These are an ideal Christmas gift and I’m so impressed I’ll be ordering more.

Now do ignore these images if you like! I’m not such a photo person these days and trying to get a full body shoot by yourself doesn’t always lead to the most flattering images.

How To Make Your Own Christmas Cards

8 Oct

I love Arts and crafts and feature most on my sister blog Mummy of Many Talents.

But as I’ve already shared a post on personalised Christmas cards on this blog today I thought it would be pretty cool to feature this here too.

I was actually given the idea to create the cards by the lovely people at “Getting Personal” who have some fantastic Christmas gift ideas and its their falt I’ve come over all festive

Christmas can be an expensive time of year and making your own cards and decorations can often lesson the burden a little.

So, I spent the weekend (well, just the Sunday) making some Christmas cards. Here’s what I made and a little step by step guide on how I did it.

Sparkly Christmas Tree Card

What I Used To Make It…
Black A4 Card
Mix of Green Sequins
Fine Green Glitter
White Deco Pen
Black Deco Pen
Mix of Sparkly Card
Mix of Ribbon
Sticky Gems
PVA Glue
Brush
Glue Dots
Glue Tabs
Pencil
Scissors

20121008-160956.jpg

Step 1) Take your black card and fold in half.

Step 2) Draw the shape of a large Christmas Tree in Pencil (ensuring you leave enough room for a star on top and a potting pot at the bottom)

Step 3) Take some sparkly card (I used gold) and cut out the shape of a pot for your tree. Then use glue dots to stick it in place (this is less messy).

20121008-161505.jpg

Step 4) Take some more sparkly card in different colours and designs. Cut into different shapes.

Step 5) Arrange your sparkly shapes around your tree to resemble wrapped presents. Once you are happy with the arrangement use sticky tabs to stick in place (Sticky Tabs are best as these make your presents look 3D).

Step 6) Use some silver sparkly card to cut out 2 small triangle and arrange these into the shape of a star sticking it to the top if your tree.

Step 7) With a brush start to cover your Christmas tree with PVA glue.

20121008-162222.jpg

Step 8) Take your sequins and start to sprinkle them over your tree.

Step 9) Once your tree is covered in sequins use your fine green glitter to fill in all the spaces and gaps between the sequins.

Step 10) Shake and bang off any excess sequins and glitter.

Step 11) Choose some different coloured/patterned ribbon.

20121008-162556.jpg

Step 12) Use the ribbon to decorate the presents under the tree.

Step 13) Use your black deco pen to add extra detail to your presents.

Step 14) Use the sticky gems to add finishing touches to your presents.

Step 15) With the white Deco pen cover your card in white dots as to create the effects of snow.

Christmas Gift Card

What I Used…

3 Different Types Of Sparkly and Patterned Card
1 Sheet of A4 White Card
Mixture of Patterned Ribbon
Glue Dots
Sticky tabs
Sticky Gems
2x Sticky Gem Boarders (black & Red)
Scissors

20121008-202727.jpg

Step 1) Fold your white card and then cut a medium size square out of one of your 3 pieces of sparkly card.

Step 2) Stick the cut card to the middle of your white card with the use of a few sticky tabs (these are better as they produce a 3D effect).

Step 3) Cut two pieces of ribbon and stick them to your card with glue dots crossing one over the other.

20121008-203311.jpg

Step 4) Cut two more smaller squares from the remaining two pieces of sparkly/pattern card you have chosen (ensuring they are roughly the same size).

Step 5) Again with the use of sticky tabs, stick the two squares either side of the bigger square ensuring they slightly overlap. Make sure either square is slightly tipped at an angle like that above.

Step 6) Take your remaining ribbon choices and repeat step 3 for the remaining two squares.

Step 7) Stick some gems in the middle of your squares to add the finishing touches to your gifts.

20121008-204115.jpg

Step 8) Take your red gem boarder and carefully add this to the top and bottom of your card cutting away any excess.

Step 9) Take your black boarder and apply about 1 1/4 of the boarder above your decorated squares and then the same amount just below the squares (see the above image).

Christmas Stocking Card

What I Used…

A4 Piece of Black Card
1 Piece of small sparkly card
Sticky Tabs
Silver Gel Pen
Scissors
1 Sticky gem

20121008-205655.jpg

Step 1) fold your A4 black card then cut it in half.

Step 2) Cut out a stocking shape from your sparkly card.

Step 3) Stick the stocking at an angle to the middle of the card using sticky tabs (as to give it a 3D effect).

Step 4) With the silver gel pen draw a craved line starting from each end of the stocking to each end of the card (as to create the string your stocking is hanging from).

20121008-210246.jpg

Step 5) With the use of the silver gel pen write the word “Joy” at an angle just below your stocking on the right hand side.

Step 6) Add one large sparkly gem to the middle top section of your stocking to give it some bling

Step 7) Now use your silver gel pen to add all final touches such as a boarder to edges of card and bows along your stockings string (see images above).

20121008-211303.jpg

It’s hard to give a rough indication of what each card costs because I had all the materials at home. But as you can see for all 3 cards I’ve mainly used the same materials throughout and with most of my craft materials being brought fairly cheaply they are guaranteed to be really cost efficient.

Here’s a list of most of the materials, their cost and where you can get them from.

1 massive bag off mixed Green Sequins £1 (Pound Land).

Black and White Card 99p each (99p Store).

Names In Lights

6 Oct

20121006-222638.jpg

We have been busy making the little mans bedroom as sensory friendly as possible. This is important as its where he spends a lot of his time. It needs to be a room he can relax in and somewhere he is able to switch off and try to sleep in. Yes, sleeping is still difficult and its the little things that can help to make a difference.

For little man, main lighting must be kept to a low! He then has a number of sensory stimulating lights like a lava lamp and small bubble tube to produce low level lighting.

The latest light we have added to the collection is one designed by ‘Name In Lights’. By combining his love of WWE wrestling with the calming and sensory effects of mood lighting, Names in Lights have made a big impression.

These are not your average LED lights they are truly unique with each one being carefully handmade to order making no two the same.

The effect these lights give of are simply stunning. Within each crackled ice letter there is a constant, subtle colour change provided. These are not to bright or over powering, they really do create a calming atmosphere within a room. They are not just a light but also a piece of art of art for the home.

When I asked the Little man which word he wanted to be named in lights he excitedly requested the logo WWE which stands for World Wrestling Entertainment. Transport has always been his special interest but its safe to say that over the past year WWE has really began to take over.

20121006-222937.jpg

Both little man and myself are super impressed with his light. The letters came displayed on a decorative stand and little man’s named is written in gold and displayed on a black plague fitted to the front of the stand. This really was a lovely personalised touch. The lights are truly wonderful and provide a stunning light show that little man is lucky enough to experience every night.

This is a fragile product so it comes delivered well boxed but is still easy to remove and unpack, meaning your light can be plugged in and used within minutes of receiving it.

You can request what ever name or word you like! It could be your own name, initials, favourite popstar or even footballer. It really can be absolutely anything your heart desires. It comes with a USB and mains adaptor. The light is well made and although its fragile like any piece of art, with love and care it will certainly last the test of time.

20121006-222721.jpg

Impressed… Oh yes! Little man love’s his new WWE LED lights and I can really recommend these as a great addition to any room, especially that of a sensory room.

Prices vary dependent on how many letters you want. A 3 letter light like little man’s cost just £29.95 which I feel is really reasonable for a light and a hand made piece of art.

Check out Names in Lights… They run monthly competitions, have a great gallery on their website which provides lots of inspiration and ideas for possible Christmas presents.
