Communicating Though Technology

4 Mar

Like many people on the autism spectrum my little man has a fondness for his PC and more so the Internet. But its not just a hobby, Interest or even an addiction! Its his voice, the great one within… The one he can’t seem to use to express himself in the real world.

I’m not saying that Little man can’t speak, because he can! He is very verbal (ask our neighbours, the bus driver or even the postman)! Its just that little man struggles to put some of what he needs to say In the right set of words. This can lead to frustration, misunderstandings and a degree of sadness.

Of course I’d always heard about both children & adults with Aspergers having some type of connection and in many cases, great knowledge when it comes to the world of computers, many children branded as little whizz kids. I didn’t think much about this, that was in till my own child took to the keyboard.

I’ve never had to really ever teach little man something more then once when it comes to computers. I remember his interest at a young age. He was eager to know what all the fuss was about and couldn’t wait to explore cyber space. At 12 years old my son can now show me a thing or two when it comes to using a computer especially when it comes to windows (yes, its true, once you use a Mac you never go back).

Both the existence of computers and the net has opened a whole host of doors for children like Little Man. I’ve noticed that online his much more confident, fancying himself as something of a comedian at times. He loves talking to others about the world of Mind Craft, making Youtube Tutorial videos and sharing his love of wrestling and transport.

Its simple, the computer has no string of facial expressions to understand, it doesn’t constantly change its tone with every mood, it won’t ever demand you stare at it in order to prove your paying attention… Its your connection to the world and those in it. Its a place that lets you express yourself without fear in a way you know how! No ones looking at you and even if they are its through a web cam which according to the little man is an extremely cool invention (his words not mine).

As your child gets the most out of their new communication tool, they also learn and discover all there is to know about it! Little man has no issues when it comes to making spread sheets and presentations. His a massive fan of power point software and seems to understand where every file lies on his PC (even those he has no access to).

It allows him to write at speed instead of lagging behind as he struggles with his fine motor skills when doing things the traditional way. Whether his working on a new movie trailer for his youtube channel or sending that occasional funny tweet that makes everyone laugh, his expressing himself without fear… His learning, communicating and experimenting all at the same time.

All the above is fantastic, making me a very proud mother. However, though I think its great, as his mother I still feel its important he learns the communication skills required to use away from the computer, out there in the big wide world. That’s why together along with his school Little man is thought communication and social skills that we encourage him to use both on and offline.

So… Will I be at all surprised if my son grows up to get a job that involves computers, the net or both?

No… I think its looking pretty likely don’t you?

Top Children’s Titles For Christmas Stockings

22 Nov

Today I wanted to share some more fantastic publications from the fabulous Top That.

I’ve featured some of their Christmas titles here on the blog already. Now I wanted to share some others we were sent. All would be perfect for children’s stockings this Christmas.

The first book is that of the wonderful ‘Yappy Happy Dilly Dog‘ probably the most exciting book my toddler has ever had. Dilly Dog is a puppet. Simply put your hand inside the puppet and Dilly dog comes to life making this a truly exciting story for an almost 3 year old.

20121122-124804.jpg

The story is fun and exciting and the puppet makes it that bit more engaging. I seriously don’t think I’ve ever seen Harley this engaged in a story… Ever. Its his favourite for sure. I highly recommend it to toddlers and Pre-schoolers.

20121122-124851.jpg

The next book was for our Little man. At 12 years old Little man attends a special school for children with Autism and Aspergers. His choice of book is normally something that is based on fact as opposed to fiction. However, the book ‘Monster Mayhem Doodle Wars‘ is a book of a different kind, its a fantastic doodle book.

20121122-124929.jpg

Little man has difficulty with drawing and colouring because of fine motor skills. However this book involves no colouring (not if you don’t want it to that is)! All that’s needed is for you to doodle. Little man has honestly really enjoyed doing just this… Doodling!

What’s awesome is there is no right or wrong way to doodle and this sits well with little man. His been doodling without any encouragement from me which is awesome.

Monster Mayhem is all about monsters competing in the monster games (the equivalent of our olympics)! The fact that it includes a section on wrestling made it all the more appealing for my wrestling obsessed son.

20121122-125029.jpg

This book isn’t thin and flimsy. There are almost 100 pages to doodle on and will keep kids busy for months to come. Also included are a few sheets of colour in stickers. Of course the little man prefers to keep these colour free which is totally cool with me. Again I would highly recommend this book to children with a bit of inner creative flare. Its also another great idea to add to the list of toys and ideas for buying a child on the autism spectrum.

Lastly it was another doodle book that Alice was sent. ‘Popstar Doodles‘ is a real girly treat that Alice went loopy for. This awesome doodle book allows children to create outfits fit for pop stars and pop groups. Whether this be a hip hop group or a pop princess this book features them all. What’s more there are also a number of patterned pages included in this book. Kids can therefore cut out different patterns using them for the different outfit designs across the book.

20121122-125116.jpg

Again like ‘Monster Mayhem’ this is not a flimsy book and again it is packed full of pages allowing lots of creativity to be unleashed.

20121122-125202.jpg
The children were each happy with the books they received from Top That.

I am honestly yet to be sent one book from ‘Top That’ that my children are even sightly not keen on.

Save Your Pennies This Half Term

28 Sep

Can you believe it? The next school half term is already upon us!

Its my experience that half term can lead to expense, the type we parents just cannot afford. This post offers some inexpensive ideas designed to help you keep the kids happy this coming Half Term.

Firstly, be creative! Creativity cost nothing, yet it comes in endless supply. Think up some fun and engaging activities for inside the home. Get the children making Halloween decorations then together decorate the house in your spooky creations. You can bake cupcakes, even the none baking parent can pick up a packet of cheap cake mix at their local supermarket. There are endless things you can do to keep the kids happy without leaving the house. Board games and craft projects are just a handful.

If the thought of staying indoors drives you mad, head to your local park to collect acorns, pine cones and conkers. All can be found on the ground this time of the year and each will provide hours of crafty fun. Why not keep yourself and the kids active with a game of football or for those with dogs, take a nice stroll along the green chain walk. Bike & scooter rides in the woods have always been a favourite with my children.

Always check your local papers for events taking place in your local area. Most Local authorities lay on free or cheap family activities during school breaks.

Those living in the city can visit one of the many city farms. These are usually really inexpensive and in many cases completely free to visit. They also offer numerous activities specially programmed for the holidays.

Lastly, entertain the kids and have a good old sort out at the same time? Get the kids sorting out all the things they no longer need, clothes, toys etc… With the Incentive that they can sell the items at a local bootfair. My kids love doing bootfairs, especially when selling their own things as they get to earn some money. Most bootfairs run all year round and only charge a small fee to sell. So, not only are you entertaining the kids in an inexpensive way, but you may also earn a little cash too… Bonus!

Little Miss Fashion Designer

8 May

Well, it would seem that my daughter Alice-Sara fancies herself as a bit of a fashion designer.

When I was asked if any of the children would like to create their own T-shirt design Alice-Sara was first in line.

Yes, I had a vision of a somewhat messy home, what with fabric paint normally being the way forward. I couldn’t have been more wrong. All that was required was for Alice-Sara to draw her design on paper in which she coloured in felt tip pens as she normally would.

I couldn’t believe how very simple this whole design process was turning out to be! Having simply drawn her design on paper this was then scanned onto the computer and clothes2order done all the hard work so we didn’t have to!

Alice-Sara drew a really bold funky picture of what I’m told is a drawing of myself (seriously… I don’t wear that much lipstick in the flesh).

Clothes2order offer a huge choice of customisable products from great brands. We opted for a plain white T-Shirt in a size 9-10. This was from the well known brand fruit of the loom.

The company stock T-shirts in varying sizes from children’s tees to adults. Because Clothes2order have this huge range on site meaning nothing has to be ordered in and the fact all printing is done on site, makes the service an astoundingly quick one when it comes to dispatch & delivery times.

All customising can be done on line, this includes anything from uploading your design to entering text for added slogans or names. Whether ordering just one t-shirt or 100 (yes, there is no minimum order) this is done in minutes.

Certain product lines are available to order on express delivery but all products are dispatched in record time.

I absolutely love the finished t-shirt bearing my daughters creative drawing of her mummy caked in lipstick… In fact we all thought it was brilliant and now Little man has expressed an interest to possible try his hand at designing one too.

20120508-191015.jpg

Designing you’re very own t-shirt Is a fab way of keeping the kids entertained and making their art
Into something that bit more special. I would recommend it to anyone.

This is a review post, though opinions are honest and that of my own. We received the t-shirt free of charge but was under no obligation to have to write about it.

Little one’s can take great pictures with the V-Tech Kidizoom Twist this Christmas

24 Dec

1

DAY TILL CHRISTMAS

The children have been extremely lucky to road test some of the newest toys on the market, and as the Santa’s Little helpers comes to an end we still have a few more to come.

When we were asked to review the V-Tech Kidizoom Twist, I have to admit that I myself became a tad over excited! Harley is forever putting his little chocolate fingers all over my camera so the prospect of him having his own couldn’t have come soon enough.

The Kidizoom Twist is in fact aimed at pre-schoolers aged from 3 years, Harley may actually only be 2, nonetheless he loved it all the same! It really is felt that my youngest little helper may in fact grow up with an interest in photography, and his not half bad at it either.

V-tech have been extremely clever when creating the Kidizoom twist, the must have Christmas Gift which is featured in the ‘Argos, fab fifteen’ (Top fifteen christmas toys for 2011).

The 2 megapixel camera camera with 5 digital zoom and coloured screen has a number of clever features designed to bring ease of use, entertainment and learning to it’s tiny users. The Kidizoom twist really is more than just your average kid’s camera. It’s really funky design makes it super cool and appealing to children while it’s designed to restrain bumps and falls avoiding them horrid costly replacements.

The Kidizoom Twist features not one but two lenses window’s so your tot doesn’t come across the problem of having to angle the camera in-order to see their target image and position the camera accordingly to take a picture. The child can instead hold the camera at eye level and take a picture with ease.

That’s not all, this camera has a number of special editing features allowing your child to create some great features to their pictures such as frames, wacky stamps and the ability to distort the picture in-order to create some really funky funny faces, which I feel is very appealing for children on the autism spectrum (Harley’s elder brother, Little man loves this feature on his younger brother’s latest gadget). Another fabulous feature to this camera is the voice recording mode that allows you to edit & change the tone of your voice to five effects (pitch up, pitch down, slow, robot and echo)  you can then add the edited voice to your images.

The Camera also has a number of built-in games, five in total, you can even use your own pictures within the games to play games such as spot the difference amongst a whole host of others.

If all that doesn’t sound great enough Kidizoom also has the capability to video, giving it that extra edge.

Oh… and in case you were wondering about the name and the reference it makes to the word twist? This camera does actually have a revolving lenses, meaning it spins round to face the photographer in-order for them to create the perfect self-portrait or video of themselves.

Harley loved the Kidizoom twist and to be honest so do his older siblings who actually ran-out two different sets of batteries. Little Harley is just mastering them all important motor skills so yes, he did drop the camera once or twice, but the protective rubber casing around the camera ensured its safety and saved it from breakage.

We, actually received the camera on the morning of the day we set of to Butlin’s so Harley got to bring his lovely new Kidizoom twist along for the ride, which provided lots of photo taking opportunities.

Parental perspective.

I loved this eye-catching camera from v-tech, the only disadvantage I have, is the fact the screen is a tad small (I did expect a slightly bigger screen) though this is meant for younger children and despite the screen being a little small its more than enough for a pre-schooler. I did love the amount of features V-Tech have packed into this kids camera, it really is so much more than a camera, with games and video recording, it’s my opinion that the camera is great value for money.

The camera helps the development of hand eye coordination, gross and fine motor skills while allowing their growing imaginative and creative sides to shine through. It’s great, not only is this super fun but it’s actually quite educational too!

We easily award this one with a 4 out of 5 stars.

 DAYS TILL CHRISTMAS

With ten sleeps left till Christmas day, I’m feeling more festive than ever, and as promised this December is going to be packed with Christmas cheer and that means lots of Christmas inspiration and fabulous competitions.

Arm & Hammer

Image via Wikipedia

Arm & Hammer  have launched  a fantastic creative competition as a celebration of it’s all new MyWay Spinbrushs. These fab brushes launched in late July are battery operated children’s toothbrushes and  have been designed to make teeth brushing fun, they are the perfect addition to any child’s stocking this Christmas.

Arm & Hammer have also donated two awesome Spinbrush’s (one in each colour) to our awesome Christmas Countdown, giving you lot the chance to win one!

Firstly let me tell you about this awesome competition they are running over on the CartoonNetwork.com till the end of December.

This is a free interactive game that inspires creativity and a little healthy competition between boys and girls. Boys can compete against the girls to design the best looking virtual toothbrush and each week the top 5 designs are showcased in a specially designed gallery with each artist winning them self not a virtual but real MyWay Spinbrush that they can design at home.

 How it works

Just like the real thing, Little ones can decorate a Spinbrush with the use of stickers, the difference is that this is a virtual brush and to create such a masterpiece children simply drag and drop their chosen stickers onto their virtual brush. With a choice of 141 decorative stickers the possibilities are endless and they can really unleash their creative flare.

Stickers can be used to spell out names or any other words plus decorate with animals, rainbows, cars, instruments and so much more.

Just visit the  CartoonNetwork.com  and let your child have fun displaying their creativity! Remember, this competition will close at the end of this Month (December) so you have to be quick.

So would you like the chance to win one of two Spinbrushs?

 Let me help you decide!

Arm & Hammers MyWay Spinbrush is a battery operated brush that comes in pink or blue. With each brush a range of stickers are supplied to allow your child to unleash their creativity and decorate their own brush.

This helps make brushing their teeth (what often feels like a chore to many children) a fun experience while helping parents to create a good bathroom routine for their children.

Being a parent of three and having a child of 11 with Aspergers Syndrome I know just how hard this can be! My son has sensory sensitivities and really finds this a difficult task to undertake. This may prove a good distraction and make a difficult experience more fun.

The brushes can be brought for around £5.99 each from stores such as Boots and Tesco’s

 So… Are you convinced?

As part of our Big Christmas Countdown the lovely Arm & Hammer have donated one pink and one blue Spinbrush.

I will therefore draw two winners at random, to enter just follow the instructions below.

Compulsory actions

Share with me one fantastic parenting tip, it can be anything you like, just share it in a comment here.

You must leave a contact (twitter or email) so I can reach you if you are lucky enough to win.

As easy as child’s play

27 Sep

google image

Play, A god given right for all children!

Its importance is critical to the development of every child regardless of, Class, age, race, gender or ability!

With every game of peek a boo, every story told and building block added to a carefully constructed tower, your child learns something new & exciting.

A child may not speak or be able to hear, he may not walk, they may be even confined to a wheelchair, nonetheless this doesn’t mean the child will benefit from play any-less, regardless of a child’s disability, they should be encouraged in play, and will enjoy it like any other child.

As a mother to three children, I really love playing and interacting with my children, whether its make-believe, a board game or something else all together! Though yes, I do admit it’s not always easy to find the time, yet its something I consider important so try to make it a priority (something we engage in a few times a week minimum).

As most regular readers will know, my eldest son has Aspergers syndrome which forms part of the autism spectrum. At almost 11 years old, Little man was my first-born, when I was at the tender age of 18. I noticed pretty early on in little mans life that his play style was somewhat different from what I considered to be typical play for a child his age.

My daughter didn’t come into our lives for a further two and a bit years, meaning I had plenty of one on one time with my developing baby. Games such as Peek a Boo or sing alongs didn’t give of that WOW factor for Little man, instead they sent him into a howling frenzy.

Regardless of the above I persisted in my quest, a road of discovery, encouraging my child to engage in interactive play. I knew he got enjoyment from playing alone, I didn’t discourage, though I didn’t reframe from interactive play either! I’m convinced this has been of some benefit to my child now his older.

Play helps feed a child’s imagination helping it grow, it allows a child to use creativity while helping them to connect to their surroundings and adapt play to their environment. I believe that play can help a child learn certain roles and requirements while aiding the development of dexterity, physical, cognitive strength.

When your child is on the autism spectrum, play may not be what you typically expect it to be!

Yes, I learnt the hard way, don’t we all?

I learnt that my child didn’t actually require all the latest toys that the boy next door was playing with. My expectations both before and after Little man was born were unrealistic, I had naively assumed that all children played the same way! Play was play, nothing more, nothing less, It all amounted to the same thing! God I had a shock awaiting me and a hell of a lot to learn.

I had no intention on lying to my friends and family when I announced that Little man loved Bob the builder only to end up with a house full of Bob merchandise come Christmas! In some respects I think I half convinced myself it was the case, well he had at least glanced in the direction of the tool kit I had brought him!  It wasn’t just Bob the builder, I was a mother moving with the times & quite honestly the latest craze that I quite often learnt about from the gloating neighbour who would quite often proudly inform me about the latest Spiderman bike her son was now whizzing around on! The next week Little man would have that very same bike, though it remained in the cupboard by the front door only ever seeing the light of day once, twice if you include the day I awkwardly tried to get it home on the bus. This was one of hundreds of toys that were both a waste of time and yes money!

Looking back as I write this I get a glimpse of how bloody crazy I was! Yes, total denial sweep through me.

It was only once I had taken a few steps back and observed the situation that both myself and especially little man began to benefit.

I note… No, Little man did not like playing with Cars (though he quite does today) he did however love spinning the wheels over and over again! I decided that actually that was OK.

I note… No, Little man did not love Bob the builder (though I only wish I had kept all that merchandise as my youngest is Bob gaga) though he did love Thomas the tank. I decided again, that was fine!

I discovered that between the ages of 2 and 7 Little man only ever really played with train sets and transport mats despite his bedroom now looking like the Disney store!

 Finally I excepted this!

I stopped focusing on that Little boy next door, therefore letting go of that, “My child should be playing with that toy” scenario! I focused on the Little man instead and what I saw was no longer what I felt I needed to see through my own stereotypical rigidness, I now saw Little man for the child he actually was! I successfully learnt my first very valuable lesson about play!

“Play is unique there is no right or wrong way of doing it”!

By stepping into Little man’s world while taking small steps to engage with him in this child lead play I noticed he slowly became more interactive, wanting me to take an interest in his games.

Yes, all along I just needed to go with the flow (so to speak) I needed to embrace and celebrate his interest, a massive milestone

Oh, and did I mention that big credit should be given to my wonderful daughter? Siblings can actually be a massive source of learning  for the child on the spectrum, Alice-Sara certainly was!

Alice-Sara was that child who played like I also assumed all children did! She played the way I always expected the Little guy would!

Through sheer willingness and determination his younger sibling did something wonderful without really knowing it! She introduced her older brother to role-play! She taught him the value of this type of play and helped him develop the tools needed to engage in it!

 google image

It is this aspect of play that I firmly believe is the true instrument needed for a child with Aspergers to progress.

I don’t know if Alice-Sara just longed for this type of interactive play from her older brother, but as a small child she fought to get it, and she did!

OK, it isn’t perfect, as much as he is able to engage in such play it is still largely ritualistic and he can become overly controlling often using his younger sibling as a play object, yet his come a long way!

However ritualistic and Un-spontaneous his play maybe, his sister has successfully taught him how to play schools (a game he still plays today, though it always involves a school “bus”) he also loves playing shop keepers and hospitals (if his the ambulance driver of course)!

This variety of play offers so much to the child on the spectrum. The child will learn important social interaction skills, and a number of other important life skills they will acquire in life.

I’ve seen my Little man go from the child who really did prefer the box as opposed to the toy that came in it at Christmas (mainly due to what I was giving him) to a child who now enjoys play so much more and through he still does it alone, he is much more willing to play with his peers even if they don’t always oblige to him joining in.

Yes, he still has them “odd” items on his Birthday and Christmas wish list; Batteries padlocks, neon electric fly zapping lights; and 20 cans of DR pepper to name a few; yet he also loves, computers, lego, model buses and trains, bikes, scooters, board games and magic tricks.

Recently I saw a worrying statement

“As easy as child’s play don’t apply to children with autism”

 That is bum fluff!”

“Just because it isn’t typical doesn’t mean it isn’t magical!”

I learnt that the hard way, I hope you don’t!

This is all thanks to the WoodenToyShop who sent us some toys to review (free of charge) If this wasn’t nice enough they also let us pick something special for the readers. This wasn’t easy! I wanted to choose something that was unisex and appealing to all children especially those like my son on the autism spectrum. Though everyone is different I still struggled so appointed my chief Elf with the responsibility. Little man didn’t disappoint and I hope you all agree!

Win a John Crane Children’s wooden guitar in one of two beautiful designs.

Choose from pink flowers or blue stars.
