Writing a book on parenting a child with Aspergers

25 Jun

Yes, it’s official, the girl who declared in school that she would never acquire an interest or desire to write, has actually gone ahead and started writing her very own book!

It’s been on the agenda for sometime now and when asked the question of “Could you see yourself writing a book on parenting a child with Aspergers which has been inspired by your blog” during a press interview with the local paper as a result of winning a Mad blog award last September, I suddenly found myself saying “Yer, why the hell not”

Now, I don’t want to give to much away on here, after all I don’t want anyone running away with my story, but I will say its going to be me wearing my heart on my sleeve and telling it how it is.

It won’t be a “How To Book” and I hope it won’t be regarded as just another “Parenting a child with Aspergers book” my aim isn’t to make it a long winded story involving the ins and outs of symptoms and triggers, but more the affects ignorance can have and how it’s not only the child’s mental health that suffers as a result.

Having attended the brilliant Britmums Live parent bloggers confrence over the weekend (post on that to follow) I was able to obtain some tips and advice in the “The Path To Getting Published With Bloggers That Have Done It” workshop (which was most inspirational).

Yes, I had already started writing prior to the workshop so therefore had already obtain ideas on the style of writing I wanted for my book, the market I was aiming it at attracting and so forth, as for getting it published and how to go about doing so I had no idea!

In such a short space of time the speakers filled my brain with need to know info and It left me that bit more informed when it comes to the “Dos and Don’ts” when trying to get published.

As a result of this fabulous workshop I’ve since had plenty to occupy my mind! Yes, there’s the question of do I and should I be trying to get myself an agent? And if so where to start? I’ve also thought more about how I should approach publishers and agents to gain interest in my book and how this is done in a somewhat different way than that of the “Fiction book” There’s the important factor that actually I don’t have to have written my entire book to do so, a letter with my book proposal and showing how marketable I am is actually a more important factor at this stage! The fact that I have a good online presence is apparently a very good start and that of my blog is a massive added bonus. So basically showing I already have readership and I’m good at promoting myself, my blog and that of my interest, through social media (yes, twitter followers, Facebook page likes and blog subscribers) actually means I’m in a good position to go for it and start making it happen!

To think my writing could go beyond the reach of my blog is one exciting but also slightly nerve-wracking feeling!

If my story makes it onto paper which is encased within a front and back cover I’d have archived so much more than I first set out to! So much so, that thinking about it makes my tummy flip! Yer, what do you make of that misses disapproving head shaking English teacher?

My writing journey has been something of an incredible one. My first post almost 4 years ago, was my way of expressing the emotions I was experiencing during them very hard days pre-diagnosis. It was a release, despite it being there for the world to read it was for me! A way to let go of anger, unload my head and get through another day. Over time this changed, although the above reasons remained it also became my way of communicating with those who related to my story. I gained advice and as time passed by I began to realise that I had been providing comfort to others.

My writing helped me grow stronger, it helped me through hard times and importantly, it helped me find my voice. I wanted to help others, mainly I wanted to raise awareness for Autism and Aspergers (the later being the diagnosis my son had by now obtain).

The Internet is a powerful tool, but more powerful is that of ones voice, though not actually heard but read. My writing allows me to express myself much more than I would think possible if I was speaking out loud. My writing comes from my heart and I hope that will come through in my book.

So, there you have it! I’ve been inspired to get out there and make this really happen. Now I’ve just got to reach out and this post will be a start. So with that if anybody can help me, point me in the write direction, offer any tips, advice and so forth then I’m all ears!

Any agents out there… Well… HELLO do step forward, come on… Don’t be shy!

Gearing up for Britmums Live 2012

21 Jun

20120621-174633.jpg

Can you believe it, tomorrow is the big day… It’s Britmums Live and the BiB awards.

This week has gone by super fast and now I’m in a bit of a state trying to get myself ready (I’m not the most organised of bloggers). I realised yesterday that my cards haven’t arrived, so have been busy making my own only to realise I have no ink in my printer and no card to print on.

This means that early tomorrow morning following a trip to the Docters with my youngest, I’ll be doing a super mad dash to PC World before getting back home, printing my cards, cutting them out and finally setting off to my destination Travelodge on the city road where I’ve paid for early checkin. Lucky I’m only located in South London or I’d be a lot more nervious than I am now.

Talking of being disorganised, I still haven’t decided what I’m wearing. I did have one outfit in mind then suddenly remembered that this is a two day event so after preparing and making the kids dinner I’ll be dishing through the wardrobe for a couple of outfits ( sadly I’m having a fat day which never seems to help when trying on clothes)! I hear it’s going to rain so wellies and a rain mac sound much more appropriate.

With all this on the agenda, am I looking forward to tomorrow? Hell yes, very much so!

As some may know, I’m a finalist in the BiB awards for the most inspiring blog and the winners will be announced tomorrow night. There is some hot competition all being other great blogs I read so even if I don’t win I know I would have lost to a brilliant blogger worth losing to (if that makes sense). I’m just really thankful to have got this far.

I love how the BiBs will be held in conjunction with the Britmums Live conference and I just can’t wait to meet up with all my favourite bloggers, some I’ve met before and others i’m yet to engage with in the real world.

The schedule for this years event sounds awesome and I’m really looking forward to a number of the workshops and some of the speakers listed for this years event.

This isn’t my first big conference, I was lucky enough to win a ticket and obtain a sponsor for last years Cybermummy. Though despite having been blogging for a number of years, I knew very few parent bloggers and may have resembled something of a loner lol!

I have been lucky enough to meet many parent bloggers since then so hopefully this year won’t be the same. That’s why I think the Britmums Butterflies Is an awesome idea for any bloggers that feel like I did last year.

I’ve also bagged myself a lovely sponsor this year, Orchard Toys who have kindly covered my cost, so thank you guys.

Well, that’s enough from me, as you can see I have lots to organise, so I’ll best get on with it.

If your attend Britmums Live tomorrow then I will see you all there.

Just another Britmums Live Meet and Greet

1 Mar

Yes, typical Claire Louise, I have been meaning to get my backside in gear and post this “Meet & Greet” for the best part of a few weeks!

Although I love blogging a little too much, this also highlights my struggle to get a round to all them little things, due to my sometimes bonkers existence as a mum (yes… kids can be demanding, especially those on the autism spectrum, as well as those under 3 with a host of questions starting with the word, “WHY”)!

Never mind, better late than never, a term I’m most fond off, I must admit!

Well, given I’m writing a Britmums Live “Meet and Greet” you have likely established already that, Yay… I’m going to Britmums Live 2012, and boy am I excited *stops typing and engages in a brief few seconds of childish behaviour by jumping up and down on a freshly made bed*

So, before I roll off them likes and dislikes which I’m pretty confident you don’t give a hoot about anyway, I should just thank my wonderful Britmums Live Sponsor, “Orchard Toys” for making my attendance possible 🙂 *join me in giving the sponsor a big hand please!*

Obviously I write the blog A boy with Aspergers (which I’m guessing you may have worked out, given you’re here now)! What you may not know, is, I also write the blog Mummy of many talents (my newest project, launched Jan 2012)! I have 3 beautiful children one who has Aspergers syndrome and special educational needs.

Here it goes, enjoy my meet and Greet!

This is me (right) with the lovely Lou from Bloggomy on my left.Twitter Handle: @clairelouise82

Yes, I guess I could go on, though better to have more likes than dislikes 🙂

Well, if after all that rambling you fancy tracking me down at Britmums Live this June 2012, then please do 🙂 I’ll be the one wandering around with a huge smile on my face, not knowing what to do with myself as a result of being anything other than a mummy for a whole 2 days!

Oh, and if you’re staying at the Travelodge on the Friday be sure to wave a hand and agree to come drinking with me *bad Claire Louise*

Do you fancy sponsoring an award winning blogger to attend BritMums Live 2012

8 Jan

Fancy sponsoring an award winning blog
to attend the parent blogging event of the year?

As an avid parenting blogger of 3 years, who is passionate about her blog, I like to attend the big name conferences in order to gain tips and inspiration on all aspects of blogging and the world of social media.

That’s why in June 2012 I hope to attend the biggest of them all “Britmums live

This two-day conference is solely dedicated to the British parenting blogger & its audience and will attract some 500 attendees. Britmums live is run by the UK’s largest parent blogging network of more than 3,000 influential and engaged bloggers and is set to make a massive impression on the blogosphere.

What with some fantastic top name bloggers all set to attend and some high-profile speakers, such as Sarah brown and Ruby wax its the ideal time to connect with bloggers.

So… If you’re a brand looking for a way to get noticed, sponsoring an influential, well established blogger who knows how to network could be the way forward.

Having been sponsored to attend events such as Cybermummy 2011 (sponsor, Londontown.com) and the Mad blog awards 2011 (sponsor, OptiBac Probiotic’s) which I was chuffed to have won the Mad blog awards most inspiring blogger of 2011, I can promise that your brand would be very well represented.

If you are looking for a parent/mummy blogger who has a good reputation with some big name brands (Argos, Sainsbury’s & Micro scooter just to name a few) with the addition of an influential reach within both the parenting and special needs communities, then I just might be your blogger!

WHAT CAN I OFFER IN EXCHANGE FOR SPONSORSHIP?

I’m A Guest Blogger At The Business Mums Unite

8 Aug

This post isn’t about my children, or autism, “OK both are mentioned a tiny weeny bit!

Ok, so… I’m a mum who likes to get heard when it comes to autism, aspergers and special educational needs. I love blogging about the madness and sometime sheer randomness that is my life! Yes,… I’m a mum that blogs and although the term, “Mummy blogger” is something of a crap one… I love it all the same, blogging is therapy and I admit it, throwing my hands up in the air now… I love to write, something that used to resemble a pain in the butt. Then there is this extremely privileged role I’ve acquired… parenting these three amazing, beautiful children I have created (Ok, I didn’t create them all by myself, but with a little help from their daddy). But despite my love for my children, the task I embank on raising awareness for autism campaigns, while trying hard to contribute towards creating a recognisable change whether educational or otherwise, and of course my love of being amongst other great inspiring parent bloggers, I still need more! There is still so much left for me to do, I just require a push! Of course, there will always be things to challenge you within the areas just discussed but believe it or not, there are a number of other areas of interest I still want to try and pursue. Many parents of children with a disability no matter what it maybe, don’t want to talk about it when there is no need, they don’t want to build a career around it or expand on the knowledge learnt from the battles faced… I actually do, that hasn’t changed! However, as mentioned, I also want to put my hand at other things to.

There have been so many ideas, ambitions, “If you like” I often drift into a daze and think, “Yes, Of course I can do that, It will be a doodle” I’m not talking about anything in particular here! There have been many “Crazy ideas” this mum has acquired throughout the years, but this last year, there have been a few that just wont sit and rest at the back of my mind.

“Shut up Claire” I’m aware I’m rambling here (something else I’m good at) and I’m just as much aware that I’m making no sense whatsoever! OK, the point…. I do actually have some…. Well, it’s centred around this invite I received… I’m very excited as I have been invited as a guest blogger to the launch of the very first Business Mums Unite Conference, which will be hosted at the Albert Hall Conference centre Nottingham UK on the 19th, October 2011. Are you now laughing? I know I’m not a business mum, “A mum, yes… Business mum, No…” but as mentioned I’m writing about the event so I’m going to be there! Now this is important so listen up mums! ” This is an event bringing mum’s in business together to socialise, gain inspiration, share and encourage one another, however the event also targets all them mum’s like me, the ones with the ideas floating around in their heads but never acted upon. Here you can attend work shops, talk to those who have taken the leap, gain inspiration, network, and get a real feel for the possibilities surrounding you.

Now I look a fibber, as many would have clearly established by now that, “That’s a mum with a burning ambition” Yes, there is a specific route I’ve considered taking and it’s not that I’m not motivated girls! I just don’t know how to take the steps. It’s hard to explain without splashing my ideas all over the blog for the world to see! Lets just say… i don’t have a clue! I’m a pretty sleek networker (compliment to self) but this requires more, and what with the desire to study for my degree, I’m starting to think that I somehow consider myself to be something of a, “Wonder Woman” That or I’m going to make time stand still! “No, I don’t think so either!” So… Looks like I’m heading for the right event and how about some company?

So…. Here I am laying it out on the table, I want to build a successful career for that of myself and my family. I feel most privileged at the fact I’ve been considered good enough to report on the Ins and outs of the day both pre and post event. This for me is the opportunity to report and yes, take some notes for my own naughty gain… HA-HA-HA

All mothers, especially you fellow blogging mums (yes, you know who you are)! Who fancies Nottingham on the 19th October?
