Have Yourselves A Merry LEGO Christmas

16 Dec

As many will already know my little man is a tad LEGO crazy. That’s why we are very pleased to have been granted the privilege of becoming official LEGO family bloggers.

A week or so back I wrote a post titled “What children with Aspergers really want for Christmas” I wrote this as result of a tread I started on my Facebook page asking other parents of children diagnosed with Aspergers what was on their child’s Christmas wish list. The feed back was amazing what with some 5,000 + page members I managed to start a decent conversation thread and gather lots of great answers.

The list featured the unusual strange requests such as leaf blowers and doughnuts to the more desired gifts of smart phones, Star Wars and iPads However, appearing most frequently on the list was that of LEGO… Whether Lego StarWars, Lego city, or Lego friends… Lego was most definitely the most desired gift of all. You can read the post Here.

With this I couldn’t wait to bring my readers this very awesome Lego gift guide which won’t break the bank. All the Lego sets below are currently being sold for under £20. I do hope this will provide you all with some last minute Christmas inspiration.

20121216-122132.jpg

Lego Creationary: This is a must buy family game for Christmas that allows players to really show of their Lego building skills. This interactive game requires 3-8 players allowing larger family groups and friends to enjoy the game together.

With four categories, vehicles, buildings, nature and things, a Roll of the Lego Dice will reveal which one. As you build your fellow players have the job in guessing just what it is your creating. With three levels of difficulty imagination is the key. Recommend Age 7+

The game normally retails for around £23, however Argos currently have it on special for £18.75 (the joys of last minute Christmas shopping)

Little Man Has Turned Scottish

12 Nov

Have you ever heard about those with Aspergers being able to change their voice (the way in-which they talk)?

I have, you see, I’ve been living with a child who has suddenly gone from English to Scottish basically over night.

His obsession with WWE and TNA wrestling is the cause. His favourite wrestler is Drew Mclntyre and he happens to be from Scotland.

The Little man started out by just copying his entrance walk into the ring, he then started to paint his face the Scottish flag and now his mastered the accent.

Now, I have nothing against the Scottish people of the world, I have many Scottish friends. However, the little man is not Scottish and although the accent is mastered down to a T, he is actually driving me loony speaking this way.

Yes, of course in the beginning it was a little bit funny (after all he sounds just like him)! But you really can only tolerate so much of it. His even using the voice when it comes to him requesting things etc. I don’t think his doing it at school… Well, I can only hope he isn’t that is!

Over the years Little man has spoken in a number of tones and voices, ones that he hears and then copies. For many years he would switch from his everyday tone of voice to that of a monotone one, as if he was a talking computer. His also had a strong interest in transport and would recreate the train and bus announcements… He always got it spot on. Now with his ever evolving interest in wrestling I was convinced it was just going to be the mimicking of the entrance and the actual matches… But this, this is just bonkers!

However, this type of behaviour isn’t one that is completely unknown with those on the autism spectrum. I decided to look into this more and had a look on google to see what I could find. I actually came across a conversation trend on “Wrong Planet” that was started by a 16 year old British girl with High Functioning Autism. She states that she is a naturally quiet person but when she does speak she speaks with a strong Irish or Scottish accent despite her naturally having a British accent. She states she chooses to speak this way and people now know her to do so.

There is also a section in a book wrote by Tony Attwood on this very subject. I took this quote from the Tony Attwood website … “My mother tells me I was very good at capturing the essence and persona of people. At times I literally copied someone’s looks and their actions. I was uncanny in my ability to copy accents, vocal inflections, facial expressions, hand movements, gaits and tiny gestures. It was as if I became the person I was emulating (p.22).

Why I’m not looking forward to my toddler starting school

8 Oct

Who said it was meant to be easy.

They stand in little groups chatting to one another about their wonderful children. They sound as though they are almost in competition, yet desperate to impress one another.

Do I wish I was stood there with them. One of the mums who gets invited around the chief mummy’s house for a cuppa and a biscuit… No, not even for one minute!

Its strange, we see these social gatherings happening when we were at school! Yet some 15 years on its almost the same. Even stranger still is the fact that half of these social gatherings consists of the exact same people only older. They are now mothers themselves yet still raise their snobby little noses just as they did when we where teenagers.

I can’t sit here and label all mothers in this way… After all I know I’m not. And I’ve seen others who give a friendly smile and a node as they walk on by. But on the whole they keep themselves to themselves.

I have nothing against the mother who easily befriends every other child’s mother in their child’s class! However I do have something against the ones who make the business of other mothers their own and everybody else’s for that matter. Worse still they never normally seem to get the gossip quite right, resulting in some top notch bull shit or another flying around the community you live in.

I once read in the paper about two mothers kicking off at the school gates with their children present and of course everyone else’s. One mother was so badly attacked she was hospitalised while the other was taken of to the cells for some cooling off time. Another horrendous story I saw splashed all over the national news was that of a father attacking another father during their children’s Christmas production. The guy actually bit of the other guys finger and spat it out like some sick animal. I only hope they got the children out of sight because that’s the stuff of nightmares.

I’m not worried about having my finger bite of or anything (though that wouldn’t be fun) I’m just expressing my point which is “School playgrounds can be hellish places, not just for the pupils but for that of their parents too!”

So… Why am I banging on about all this now?

It’s simple… I’m already fretting about the day that will come and see my youngest child take that giant leap into education. His now almost 3 years old, and the time so far has just flown by. Before I know it I’ll be there… And again i’ll be stood in the playground with a new group of mums.

20121008-134937.jpgmy youngest Harley almost 3

As regular readers will already know, When it comes to schools I seem to always have some kind of crappy issue. History is my proof.

I know that my eldest child being on the autism spectrum meant he didn’t fit in with his “Typical” peers and this therefore meant that I as his mother failed to fit in with their “Typical” mothers. Well, lets be honest here… I never overly tried! Friendships just happen and don’t need to be pushed (some need work but these are existing ones). If I don’t instantly click with someone then its 98% chance I never will.

20121008-135343.jpg

I remember when we’d be stood waiting in the infant playground for the bell to ring indicating the start of the school day. Up in-till that point, little man would be running around like a rabbit with headlights. He’d bump into everything and everyone. Some may think… “And what? Isn’t this what boys do?” And to a certain extent, yes it is! However, little man had no regard for boundaries. He’d just roar into another’s conversation… Speak his mind and therefore say the most inappropriate things (normally stuff I’d actually be thinking but never likely to say aloud). He’d run and grab footballs from the ground while others tried to play a game and many peers therefore saw him as a really big pain in the butt! Me, I’d be dashing about after him like a crazed headless chicken, failing miserably at any attempt to catch him let alone control him. Mothers would stare, some shaking their heads and tutting, others turning to their friends in disgust. Whenever Little man dared attempt to approach their child they’d quickly be dragged away and warned “Don’t play with that child, you hear me?”

I hate it when parents act like my child is some sort of diseased being. They look at him like his some little demon child who could potentially convert their child into something similar. I used to let the ignorant stares upset me and remember that at one stage what others thought meant a big deal to me. But in all honesty you cannot spend each waking day like this. Yes you can advocate for your child but running after every parent who looks at you slightly funny probably means you’ll be spending most of your life running. Yes, I’d be a lot fitter but I don’t fancy it all the same.

So, there you have it! This is one of my many reasons I’m dreading the toddler starting school. I just wished he stay little forever.

20121008-134721.jpgLittle man just about to melt down.

#HAWMC DAY 23 – Yes, Girls Have Aspergers Syndrome Too!

26 Apr

Of course girls get Autism & Aspergers, it’s just that we don’t hear about it all that much, well, not on the same magnitude as boys.

So, the statistics indicate that boys rather than girls, are more likely to be on the autism spectrum. The National Autistic Society states that although there is no way of knowing the exact ratio between the two sexes, studies combine together indicate a ratio of 2:1 in boys and 16:1 in girls!

Wow, that’s a huge difference in numbers, however, could this be due to how the traits of autism are displayed differently between the two sexes or maybe its societies stereotyped way of thinking making this much harder to spot in females.

It all boils down to us in a variety of ways, have you ever heard the health visitor refer to your son as the “Typical boy” or daughter as “Shy” as many girls are labelled to be? But I thought that everyone was meant to be different regardless of their sex!

Now, I’m no expert, not by a long shot, but I do remember some girls in secondary school who were so detached from their peers that they were ridiculed as being loaners or geeks. Some of these girls went through primary and secondary school never having friends and the ones that did try to socialise normally just ended up bullied by those she thought were her friends. I’m in no way indicating they were on the spectrum (who am I to make that judgement) but I know that teachers didn’t bother to find out why these children were so sad or withdrawn from those around them. As long as they produced the work expected of them it was all that mattered!

As girls we express emotion in an all together different way then boys (well this is what we are made to believe). Boys are seen to display more challenging behaviour and as a result they are more likely pulled up as having an issue or underlying condition that needs addressing (that or the teachers just can’t handle it so ship them of to the child mental health team). I believe this to be why my own son received a late diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome as despite him having reasonably challenging behaviour within the home from quite early on, this wasn’t displayed at school, just suppressed making him explosive on his return at 3.30 pm Monday to Friday. Nonetheless, once this behaviour could no longer be contained, what with his senses becoming more heightened making him more likely to tip over the edge, the school were all for statementing and special school!

Girls will always be seen as better communicators than boys and many feel that girls on the spectrum are better able to disguise symptoms whether deliberately or not. I guess this fact would make a condition such as Aspergers far harder to spot as this wont normally involve any delayed language skills.

As well as that of the above, girls are also seen to be “Just shy” or “Over sensitive” We are thought to over dramatise and cry at the drop of a hat. Us girls are seen to be more likely to have low self-esteem or a poor self image, especially during our teen years, hence the reason girls are far less likely to be referred for any type of investigations, especially if they are bright and advanced within certain areas of they’re learning.

Another theory is that girls inherit an X chromosome from their fathers which protects them from the development of autism, though if this was the case I’m sure the science of today could do a much better job of proving it!

When reading an article on the NAS site, some excellent points were made such as, girls on the spectrum tend to have similar interest to those girls not on the spectrum, example being animals or horses, soaps or celebrities. These interests are therefore not seen as usual. However once in their own safe space interest tend to be much more obsessional than that of a “Typical girl”

So, the question is “Are boys more likely to have autism and aspergers than that of girls or is it simply because the criteria used to diagnose autism and aspergers is one built purely on the characteristics of male behaviour?”

Here’s a few videos by two different girls with a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome, these videos and more can be found on my channel under my subscriptions.

The Birds The Bees & A Boy With Aspergers

25 Jan

As a twenty-first century mum I thought I had it all planed out!

We all know that eventually the day will come when as a mother we are required to have that little chat with our children, you know, the one about the birds and the bee’s!

Birds bees

Image via Wikipedia

I have two son’s Little man (aka A boy with Aspergers) who is 11-years-old and 2-year-old Harley. I also have a daughter ‘Alice-Sara’ who will be 9 this Sunday.

Yes, I guess I had assumed that daddy would speak to the boys and mummy would speak to her daughter. I would do it in a way that provide her with understanding , not embarrassment nor looks of horror, the terms “Bird” & “Bee” would be widely used, and we would live happily ever after!

Well, this was in-till I discovered my son, “Little man” wasn’t your “typical” child! Little man sees the world differently, he sees it in “Black & White” and this means only one thing, the subject at hand, would need approaching in a very black and white way!

There would be no “Birds” nor any “Bees” here! Instead it would be text-book, very, very text-book! Lets remember, this is a child on the autism spectrum, metaphors wouldn’t work, a literal understanding is what he has and using the birds and bees example would only result in confusion (he would be expecting bees to grow pubic hair, have a breaking voice and a use for condoms)

Guess what? Daddy wouldn’t be doing it nether, mummy would… Fan-bloody-tastic is that!

Not long after Little man started at his independent special school, especially for children on the autism spectrum, we received a letter home, explaining how some of the boys had fell into the conversation of “Wet Dreams” while on the school bus. Little man goes by  taxi each morning so he wasn’t involved in the conversation but with such small class numbers (no more than 6) I knew it wouldn’t have taken long for him to hear about the subject, my guess is he found out by playtime!

The letter just raised the subject of how our boys are now growing up and we may want to consider the talk that many parents dread!

If truth be told, little man has been known to make some pretty random, yet inappropriate comments with reference to a sexual nature for a while now. He said some things in his old mainstream school to a ASD outreach worker. I was red-faced when I read her report and on meeting her she told me he was saying such things to her without any concept on they’re meaning! OK, he knew a little but not enough, yet it certainty warranted a talk! Instead I tried to address it by telling him it was inappropriate and he shouldn’t be saying it! I know it wasn’t a great way to deal with it, yet I guess I wasn’t ready, or didn’t want to be!

It’s not just that Little Man has Aspergers, it’s also the fact his growing up, I’m therefore getting older which isn’t great, but I’m also losing my “innocent” Little man and before I know it, his going to be this teenage boy with a changing body, hair in places he never knew possible, mood strings and a deep voice!

Little man has already stated he likes girls and wants to marry more than one (goodness me, do I have a bigamist on my hands)! I guess like any mother, I don’t want my eldest child to grow up, and if anything have that bit of an extra reason to worry.

So… Yes, we did have a talk, quite recently actually! Little Man, to no surprise, asked a lot of questions and patiently awaited my answers. With every answer it sparked another question and I answered as honestly and correctly as possible. One question was will my “penis grow bigger?” another was “How do you make babies” followed by “What happens once the sperm gets in there” to which I then directed him to this amazing video, which seemed to do the trick and if anything it literally amazed him, rather than grossing him out.

He now knows that once upon a time, he looked like an alien!

He also states that he has thousands of potential “Little Man” clones swimming around inside him, which his saving for his adult life.

I guess his saving them to share with all them wife’s of his!

Well, till the next lot of text-book questions, requiring text-book answers, comes along, I feel I’ve done my best for now!

Now I guess I just sit and wait for those pending teenage years of mood swings and body hang-ups!

For now… I’m just going to enjoy my Little Man being just that…

The Mookie Mini Street Cruz 2

8 Dec

17

Days till Christmas

Harley watches his brother and sister scoot about on their scooters with wishful eyes so when the chance to add a Mookie Mini Street Cruz 2 to the Santa’s Little Helpers wish list popped up we decided this one was for the Littlest member of the household.

Harley is actually 2 in a few short days, with the scooter being recommended for a child aged 3 yrs plus, he is a little younger than the product is aimed at! However Harley is tall and quite advanced for his almost 2 years so it was final, Little H would put the scooter through its paces.

Mookie sent the mini Street Cruz 2 direct, and it came in no time at all, well packaged and to my door with a smile (always nice on a cold morning). Sadly the scooter sat in the hallway under the stairs untouched for a few weeks as Harley was unfortunately rather poorly with a recurring ear infection and his still not fully recovered.

I may have been acting like something of a big kid as in side this mother was bursting to get it out the box and hopefully it would put a much-needed smile on my little H’s face.

When that day finally came, I unpacked the street Cruz and discovered I had to assemble just the one set of wheels, which was so easily done, even for a mum who is really rubbish with any type of DIY.

The scooter has a really nice design, it was blue in colour and looked rather funky with it’s 3 clear plastic wheels and flexible neck.

I liked the fact that you had two wheels at the front and one at the back, it really did seem to provide H with better stability. I really loved the flexible neck, however this was the bit that made it hard for Harley to control.

Not that there was anything wrong with it, it just meant that the handle moved too freely and with Harley being that bit younger, he really couldn’t manoeuver it like an older child would be able to. However I feel this is something that would be quickly learnt and a child of Harley’s age would actually be at an advantage, as this would give them time to learn to steer the scooter as they grow bettering their gross motor skills at the same time.

This is certainly true as Harley has already managed to do one lap unaided up and down the hallway. His quite independent and I’m sure it wouldn’t take long for him to conquer it.

I got my nephew to also try the scooter who has not long turned 4. This meant I could see the full benefits of the flexible handle as it made it incredibly easy for this 4-year-old to steer.

Nonetheless, Harley whacked on his helmet and made sure I scooted him up and down the garden path, he giggled and shouted, “Again mummy, again” he really did love it.

All the same, there is a very happy 4-year-old who has just received the Mookie Cruz with the promise to pass it back to his cousin once his that bit bigger.

Parental perspective

A really nice little scooter at a fabulous price! This really is good value for money. As mentioned, Harley is a few days from becoming 2, his tall and the scooter is the perfect size, however because of the advanced steering mechanism I really would recommend this for a 3-5 year. The Street Cruz is very strong, looks awesome and its foldable for easy storage.

It gets a 4 **** star form us.

The KRE-O Bumblebee construction set from Argos

6 Nov

As mentioned last week Argos have come on board and are now taking part in our, ‘Santa’s Little Helpers’ feature. Last time, I introduced you to the, ‘Fab 15’ (Argos top toys this Christmas) and with the help of Alice-Sara, my very willing 8-year-old daughter, we shared with you our review of the fabulous new baby Annabell.

This week it’s Little man who takes the rains when testing the ‘KREO Transformers Bumblebee’ construction set by Hasbro.

This construction set is a cross between LEGO & Transformers. It was launched a few months back and has already been hailed as one of the biggest boys toys this Christmas.

The set was delivered well boxed and contained some 300+ pieces, plus 3 Keron figures. The contents allow the child to build in two modes, giving them the chance to either build a robot (Transformer) or vehicle (Sports car).

Yes, there are lots of pieces to put together, but given to the right child this is an awesome toy. The instructions were not overly complication but maybe a tad advanced for a 7-year-old but also had lots of images to help your child along the way. Little man was really pleased with the ‘KRE-O Bumblebee’ his a big fan of LEGO and when I first told him he was being sent the KRE-O, he insisted he wouldn’t like it as it wasn’t “LEGO” How wrong he was, he honestly loves the set and a few more have been added to his Christmas Wish list.

What’s really fantastic about the Hasbro KREO Bumblebee construction set is the fact it’s prices are compatible with all your other major brands such as LEGO. They fit together perfectly and can be used together with ease.
On arrival of the KER-O Transformer bumblebee, Little man set about getting to work almost instantly having decided to construct the vehicle first. He enlisted the help of his father and in a few short hours they presented me with this…

That was it for one night. It was the following day the boys started up again and it wasn’t long till it was finished and here it is the end result…

Pretty impressive, don’t you think?

The doors open and close which delights my Little man (it’s the little things that count isn’t it)! You can also take two of your three keron figures for a test drive!

Little man has refused to take this apart to make the transformer which is father is dying to do (boys & their toys)! He told me he hasn’t yet had enough fun with his sports car, which is fine, bless him! What I can tell you is that once in Robot mode the wings can be converted into gliders for your Keron figures to take a ride on.

Little man really loves this set and despite his difficulties with fine motor skills, he has no issues, even with the smaller pieces.
Little man gave it a high 5 awarding it the full ***** stars

Parental perspective

Yes, I’ve stepped on one or two pieces of KRE-O… Ouch… they resemble LEGO in every way, including the pain they provide to your foot when trod on. I really couldn’t tell the difference between the two, so would defiantly recommend to all LEGO lovers, you wont be disappointed!

The recommended age of 7+ seems about right, although I would advise that younger children may need a little help to follow the instructions as may those who are on the autism spectrum as did Little man.

Lots of small (I mean very small pieces) so make sure this is done away from toddlers.

Provides a great bonding experience. Little man and his father had hours of fun building the bumblebee car together.

Pieces are fully compatible with other leading brands, your child may not want to build the vehicle or the robot! KRE-O helps to enhance your child’s creativity offering a multitude of play scenarios.

Once desired mode is assembled (vehicle or robot) your child is left with a great toy with lots of playability

Only disadvantage for me was that fact it came with no plastic storage case! What with the amount of pieces, I would have really liked there to have been one. However if your child has many sets of this kind the chances that they will already have one is pretty high.

Recommend: Yes

**** 4 stars from mum
