An Olympic Party with Hornby

27 Jun

Hornby are gearing up for the 2012 Olympic Games and invited myself and the kids to London’s biggest toy store “Hamleys” for a private party.

Having a child with Aspergers syndrome with an interest in transport, one who loves a good old Hornby train set meant it was an invitation to good to refuse.

My daughter had her friend stay over so and spent the day doing “girl stuff” So, this trip was one made by myself and two boys.

We arrived a little later than others, little man was busy checking out the underground, but when we did arrive we were greeted my the funky Olympic Mascot. The party was allocated in a side room and was decked out in British colours and Olympic cheer. Harley had his eye on the balloons as soon as we arrived (Thankfully he got to take one home even if he did let it go flying into the London sky a little after we left)!

Hornby had some fantastic new products on show, all released in celebration of the 2012 games. Little man loved the new Scalextric Velodrome Cycling Set which is the first and only of its kind. This has two miniature cyclist dressed in Team GB outfits that race around a Scalextric track operated by two hand held controllers. Priced at £69.99 it isn’t cheap but one of a kind.

You can only imagine how exciting the range is for my Little man. His had a special interest in transport for as long as I can remember. His 11 now and although his finally acquired some additional interests in the last year (mainly Lego and wrestling) he still loves his transport, especially trains, buses and the underground so he was pretty impressed with these below.

20120627-231519.jpg

We had an awesome time at Hamleys, both boys were smiling as we were taken on a tour around the store. Sadly little man now hates having his photo taken especially in public but as you can see this isn’t the case for the two year old.

20120627-231736.jpg

Harley especially, was dead impressed to meet Wenlock (yes, the one eye mascot)! Hornby have been sure to included both the Olympic and Paralympics Mascots within some of its fabulous merchandise. This includes the funky Chocolate vending machine that little man is actually lusting after, as well as some fab 2012 Mascot key rings that are really heavy and well made (we were lucky to receive some of these in our goody bags).

20120627-233847.jpg

It was a really good day and we all thank Hornby for inviting us. If you want to check out the Official range of London 2012 products, pop over to their website and check it out.

Disclaimer: I was not paid to write this post, but attended a party with the children to check out the new range and the children received a goody bag.

Fun in the Sandpit – A Review

11 Jun

When asked to review a beautiful wooden sandpit from Climbing Frames UK, I knew the children would be overcome with joy especially that of the youngest member of the family.

If anything I was hoping it would stop the little guy trying to sit and play in the cat litter… I know, not nice!

The sandpit we were sent is of the wooden type and Is from the
Fabulous Selwood range. It comes flat packed all within the one box and included with the sandpit is a waterproof cover and a canvas groundsheet to stop weeds and grass growing trough.

20120611-153222.jpg

I found the sandpit quite easy to put together, my 9 year old daughter even gave a helping hand.

What I found really great is that there is no maintenance required with this sandpit. It’s constructed from treated wood and there is no need for vanishing or painting.

The sandpit is designed as a standalone model, however our garden is so uneven that we inserted it into a small prepared dip which actually worked really well.

20120611-152521.jpg

All three children loved it and my niece Amy who is 2, the same age as the toddler couldn’t wait to come round with her bucket and spade and play with her cousin in the sunshine.

20120611-152631.jpg

It’s made a lovely addition to the garden and is a real sensory haven for Little man who is 11 and has a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome. Little man is very tactile defensive and I’ve been using the sandpit to hide different objects then giving him the opportunity to dig around and find them. This really helps him to get used to varying textures and is a great idea as part of a sensory integration plan.

Sadly when the sandpit was delivered the best of the british sunshine had been replaced with grey skies and lashings of rain. Thankfully the sun did return and the children have therefore been making the most of it!

20120611-152716.jpg

For me the included cover is a godsend. We have cats from all over visiting the garden on a daily basis. The sandpit looks most inviting and my own Tom was very tempted to use it as a Giant litter box (till I ran out like a mad woman yelling him out). For this reason I’d recommend that anyone thinking of getting a sandpit ensures it comes with a protective cover or orders one at the time of purchase. This is not only for weather proofing but avoiding the odd fluffy visitor trying to bury his toilet!

Climbing frames UK stock a huge range of good quality garden products from climbing frames, playhouses, trampolines, sandpits and more. The range is really extensive and reasonably priced. What’s more Climbing Frames UK offer a price match guarantee service, insuring you get the best price available.

20120606-200943.jpg

I do love watching the children having fun in the sun, the sandpit will do well to keep my children fully entertained. This is perfect for those summer months when relaxing in the garden or maybe having friends and their children over for a barbecue.

The Selwood Sandpit measures 1 square meter and is currently on special offer for £29 instead of £50 which makes it amazing value money.

Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post and I was not paid to write this review. However I did receive a sample of the product in-order to share my honest opinion with my readers

Expressing creativity with Galt

25 May

I like to think of myself as quite a creative person, I love getting stuck in to a great art project and I can literally spend hours sketching a picture.

Without being pushy I’ve always tried to encourage the children to express their creative flair.

It’s my belief that art is very therapeutic and although little man isn’t overly keen, he’s creative in his own special ways!

I do a lot of creative projects with the children especially the toddler while the two older children are in school.

My daughter is very naturally creative, and is always drawing a picture or making something from bits and pieces.

She recently came home quite excited over a school art project, a poster designing competition. The poster’s aim is to remind children to be respectful while in the dinner hall. Admittedly we do have a cupboard full of crafts but we were recently sent a giant Galt Art Jar that would fulfil the job perfectly.

The Galt Art Jar is packed full of everything you’re creative little monster would need to complete near enough any art project, whether it be making hairy monsters from Pom-poms, goggly eyes and coloured shredded paper or a poster fit for the school dinner hall.

20120525-013719.jpg

Within this huge jar of arty fun you will find…

Over 70 pompoms, 40 wiggly eyes, zigzag scissors, sequin pack, lots of shredded paper, 2m red fringed crepe paper, felt alphabet, 12 assorted plastic buttons, 7 cotton reels, 50 pony beads, 20 small star beads, 10 large pipe cleaners, 10 large straws, 6 sheets of self-adhesive foam sheets, 7 printed card templates, 10 sheets of A4 coloured paper, 25 gummed paper strips, glitter glue, white PVA glue, 2m wiggly white trim, 3m elastic, ideas sheet.

Alice-Sara was extremely pleased to have the Galt Art Jar to hand when designing her poster.

20120525-015753.jpg

20120525-015841.jpg

She’s not yet finished her creation but it’s almost complete and I’ll be sure to upload a picture once it is.

20120525-020437.jpg

The GALT Art Jar is fabulous and it’s providing lots of fun for all the children, tomorrow myself and the toddler will make pompom monsters and who knows what else. 🙂

GALT Art Jar cost £14.99 check it out over on their website!

We were not paid to write this review all opinions are my own. We were sent the GALT Art Jar free of charge in order to share our honest thoughts and opinions.

Story Telling With The Easter Bunny

5 Apr

If you’re looking for one great alternative to the “Typical” Chocolate Easter Egg, then I have it right here !

Abigail the adorable floppy eared bunny is the latest addition to the Hallmark ‘Story Buddy’ range.

The super soft, super cute Abigail joins her friends ‘Watson’ the Racoon, ‘Cooper’ the Bear and ‘Jingle’ the Husky as the fourth addition to an already fabulous range of Story Buddy’s and what’s more Abigail isn’t just an adorable bunny but she’s also a female one, making her the first girlie buddy of the range.

Story Buddy’s are more than just your “Typical” cuddly toy, but an interactive, innovative friend, designed to bring the magic to your child’s story time.

Like all buddies, Abigail comes complete with her own beautifully illustrated book “Abigail and the balance beam’s” that tells the story of how Abigail tries to make her mother extra proud of her by performing gymnastics.

As yourself or child read aloud specific passages from the book, Abigail will suddenly start to interact, creating a totally magical reading experience

Unfortunately, things have been a little hectic here what with us all being unwell at some point or another, the decorating of more than one room and my Mac becoming buried someplace within in the mess of it all, we therefore didn’t get to film this one! However, leading up to Christmas last year, we did review Abigail’s super cute racoon friend Watson via video in which your more than welcome to have a peek if desired.

An unwell Alice-Sara was pleased to have her story buddy to cuddle last week

Abigail truly is an adorable bunny with a lot to say. My daughter Alice-Sara 9, fell in love with her instantly, she’s also proved something of a big hit within the family as the toddler can hardly contain himself and therefore keep his hands to himself.

Dressed in her pretty pink dancers custom, she’s not only innovative but pretty stylish too.

Lot’s of fun can be had with Abigail and any of her friends, plus you’ll never become bored, not when Hallmark have created a range of additional story books especially designed for each character and priced at 5.99 each.

If that’s not exciting enough, those with iPads and iPhones can download the fabulous free app from the app store to accompany the adorable bunny. The app includes a short animated story that can be played aloud through the app’s internal narrator or even recorded by a loved one to add a special personal touch to the story telling experience. Also included on the app, are a selection of child-friendly puzzles and interactive games that allow your child to dress up Abigail, just like in the story book.

Its official, we are a Story Buddy loving household, what with our latest addition ‘Abigail’ the Bunny who is now housed alongside Watson the Racoon and Cooper the bear, don’t be too surprised if you find some more lovely story buddies moving in during the year as there are new releases planned for later in 2012.Harley the toddler with another of the buddies ‘Cooper the Bear’

These really are genius, a hit with all three of my children, with each owning a buddy of their own and enjoying reading alongside them regularly.

These are also great for the child on the autism spectrum and those with special educational needs. It was Little man who put Watson to the test during our video review last year and I found it helped to install confidence when reading aloud.

Cute, innovative, interactive, fun, educational and doesn’t rot your little ones teeth, what more could you ask for in an alternative Easter gift?

Abigail the Bunny can be brought in branches of Hallmark as-well as online and falls into the same price racket as her fellow buddies at just £19.99

I’m always happy to run the odd competition, god knows I enter enough everywhere else on the web. Given the fact I’ve won a few great prizes, some sensational ones this year, I know how nice it is to win a little something, whether for yourself, children, friend or family member.

My youngest has lots of wooden toys, some we have even featured on youtube. Harley has everything from wooden arks to wooden people, while my daughter has the most stunning three-story wooden dolls house.

The Hunt For The LEGO Minifigures Collection King

8 Mar

When a gold padded envelope dropped through my letter box, I will admit to a quickened  heartbeat and the thought that maybe I’d gone and won a holiday some place hot! The envelope contained no such thing, though what it did contain, gave my son, Little man, that same quickened heartbeat when discovering it was from LEGO and contain 4 foil packs of the latest LEGO Minifigures series 6!

Little man is more than just a little bit obsessed with LEGO, it’s now roughly boarding on the same scale as his transport obsession and he has much fun combining the two!

We weren’t expecting the Minifigures that LEGO sent, and for a child who doesn’t like to be surprised, this was an exception, he was extremely chuffed at their arrival. amongst the four foil packed Minifigures (which little man ran off to open) I discovered a letter which read…

This series, the sixth motley crew is on the hunt to find the UK’s LEGO Minifigure king collector! Email us an image of your impressive LEGO Minifigure collection and the most creative display will win an exclusive limited edition LEGO minifigure prize, Happy creating.

How exciting is that!

Little man just loves his minifigures and series 6 is packed full of new and exciting colourful creations. In this series you’ll find a funky green Leprechaun, a magical Genie, a groovy clockwork robot, a delightful Flamenco dancer, and a whole load more. Each foil pack contains a minifigure, special accessories, a display stand and collectors leaflet. There are a total of 16 Minifigures to collect within series 6. Remember packs are blind foiled, meaning you can’t see what’s inside so you may well end up with doubles that you’ll need to swap with your friends.

Little man was very impressed with his minifigures, which he has added to his growing collection. He seems most keen to get his hands on the clockwork robot, so I suspect we will be popping to the shops this Friday so he can spend his pocket-money.

As you can see from below, Little man likes to customise, chopping and changing their accessories every now and then, giving his collection his own personal touch.

Will we be entering this fabulous competition? Probably… Yes, through little man is quite adamant he wants to wait till his found his clockwork robot.

So, if your child is a Lego Minifigure collector why not join us by snapping a creative picture of your child and they’re growing collection?

Just email entries to sharday@nortonandco.com

I’m unsure of the closing date, though I am aware a winner will be chosen in the summer!

As soon as I have found out, I’ll be sure to let you all know!

For now I thought I’d leave you all with some really awesome LEGO Minifigure facts, that the Little man just loved.

Did You know that Lego Minifigures are the top-selling toy in the UK?

Minifigures have been around some 30 years!

If all the Minifigures in the world got together it would be the most populated country in the world!

Harrison Ford is the only person to have been immortalised twice as a minifigure!

Series 6 are on the shelves now and all 16 mini figured can be bought for a limited time only. Each pack cost just £1.99 and can be found at Argos, Tesco, WH Smith, John Lewis, Smyths, Toys R Us and a whole host of other popular retailers.

Build-a-Bear Workshop Fun Packs Review

6 Mar

Build a Bear workshops are pretty awesome, with store’s located all over the country, your bound to have heard of them before. My children love anything Build-a-Bear Workshop® and as a parent I think its pretty cool too! The fact you can visit a store, pick and stuff a bear, (inserting a heart with a wish attached) shop for it’s clothing and accessories then take it home is pretty exciting for a child and is a fantastic idea. We love it so much that my daughter recently had a Build-a-Bear Workshop® Birthday Party, she’s 9 and I worried maybe she was a tad to old for this now! Well, she loved it, and continues suggesting we pop in every time we’re out shopping in Bromley.

Admittedly, it cost a bit of money to be building bears on a regular basis, yes here and there, birthdays, Christmas, treats, but every week, my daughter has little chance of success! However, it seems that Build-a-Bear Workshop® have the perfect solution!

The Build-a-Bear Fun Packs are an all new and exciting pocket-money range of miniatures. All 12 bears that make up this exciting collection, all feature in their full size at Build-a-Bear Workshop® meaning your child gets the same great quality, just in a mini vision of its original form.

Just like the original bears, each comes with a heart to insert. These however, are not just any heart but a friendship heart.

The Friendship Heart series comes with one of six colourful hearts that each has a special meaning . Fill your Furry Friend with Love (red), Strength (green), Courage (purple), Happiness (yellow), Dreams (blue), or Honesty (orange). The special BABW Heart Ceremony is included so that each child can bring their Furry Friend to life.

Fun Packs cost £5.99 and include…

Mini Furry Friend

Heart and ceremony instructions

t-shirt

fabric sticker set

trading cards

Collectors guide with activities and an online code to use at www.bearville.com

Ok, £5.99 is in my opinion, a tad over priced, considering these are really small! Nonetheless, you do get a lot in your fun pack and kids do seem to love them. If Alice-Sara wants to spend her pocket-money on fun packs, I wont argue!

The best part for me, is that these are not blind foil packaged, you will therefore not end up with a load of doubles, which wouldn’t have been ideal at price of £5.99.

Alice seems to like them, keeping it on a shelf in her bedroom with all her bigger bears, I can quite honestly see her ending up with a shelf full soon enough!

The trading cards have not come in use as yet! This is because none of Alice’s friends seem to not have acquired a fun pack of their own as yet. If this does happen, I know she will likely enjoy this aspect, she is a bit like her older brother who has Aspergers syndrome, she loves to form a collection.

Check them out for yourself, what’s more, there are lots of special offers taking place at Build-a-Bear Workshop® especially for the Easter period. The latest one I’ve discovered is a Free Egg decorating kit, with every purchase of £20 or more.

Disclaimer, we were not paid for this review, though we were given a free fun pack to conduct this review. All opinions remain my own.

Mookie Toys – Pillow Pets

4 Mar

Mookie Toys have a number of awesome products, some of which the children have reviewed. This time Mookie have brought to the UK, from the US the original Pillow Pet.

Pillow Pets are more than just your average pillow but a super soft cuddly toy that can be hugged but also slept on once the velcro strap has been released and the cuddly toy is converted into a beautiful soft cosy pillow.

We were sent one of these Pillow pets by Mookie Toys to review. We choose the awesome brightly coloured yellow Bumble Bee known as BumblyBe! Others in the series, include a cuddly Monkey, playful Penguin, Cosy Panda, Cute Puppy, Magical Unicorn and a whole host of others. What’s more a new range of fluffy bunnies are due in for Easter!

We love these and although the pillow was intended for Alice-Sara (the toddler got something similar before Christmas) It’s been the toddler who has claimed it! Honestly no one is getting near this thing, Harley loves it! He can either be found cuddling up to it or resting his head on it as he watches one of his many Bob dvds!

These are seriously super tactile so ideal for the child who is tactile defensive, or those with sensitive skin. Little man loves the feel of pillow pets but given Harley is guarding BumblyBe like his life depended on it, Little man hasn’t really stood a chance of cuddling up to it!

Pillow Pets are really lovely soft cuddly toys that double up as fluffy inviting pillows. If you fancy getting your little ones a pillow with a difference, it’s hard to go wrong with one of Mookie’s Pillow Pets, even I’ve had a cuddle (at my own risk)!

Check out Pillow pets by visiting pillowpets.co.uk (prices from £16.95)

Harley & Peppa Go To Playschool

28 Feb

Oh, we received a rather special gift for the toddler last week. The postman knocked at our door with a very special delivery, in a big white cardboard envelope and addressed to Harley himself.

How excited he was to open the envelope and discover a very special Peppa Pig book! Yes, this wasn’t just any Peppa Pig book, but a personalised Peppa Pig book, titled, “Peppa Pig and Me – Harley and Peppa go to playgroup”

This is a truly special book for a truly special boy

The beautifully presented paperback story book is filled with brilliant personalised touches making it really exciting for little Harley.

This includes cartoon styled illustrations of Harley with Peppa pig, which have been cleverly generated from the details I gave when ordering the book. His name also appears throughout the story.

Harley displayed an almighty smile upon his face as I read him the story of how he spent his first day at playgroup amongst Peppa pig and all her amazing friends. He never lost interest once, keeping his attention throughout the time I was reading.

He was so adorable as he kept nodding his head and saying “Peppa pig hold Harley hand”

I was dead impressed with this book, a Ladybird publication that is beautifully illustrated and worded from start to finish.

It’s easy to order your personalised story which is available from the awesome site Buyagift.com, all you have to do is give a few details that help describe your child’s characteristics, and if desired a small personalised message, which in my opinion makes a lovely touch.

I’d highly recommend this book, and it could prove the perfect alternative to a chocolate egg this Easter.

The book is priced at £14.99, to find out more visit Buyagift.com who sell a huge range of truly unique gift ideas, from personalised books to gift experiences including pampering days which i actually wouldn’t mine this mothers day (though I’m sure the pocket-money of three little ones wouldn’t cover it)! A mum can dream, can’t she:)

17 Feb

My fab Britmums Live sponsor Orchard Toys are giving my blog readers the chance to win one of their awesome newly launched game, and what a great game it is!

Teddy Bear Game is aimed at children between the ages of 3-6 years old and can be played in groups of 2-4 players. This is a fun but educational game , helping your little one’s to master the skill of counting and colour recognition.

Children will have great fun as they race to collect and count the teddy bear cards before the puzzle is complete.
